The Huron Expositor, 1994-12-21, Page 22 -THE HURON EXPOSITOR, December 21, 1994 News and Views Hibbert Reeve named Perth Warden BY MICHELE GREENE Advocate Staff Hibbert Reeve Walter McKenzie was elected 1995 Warden of Perth County last Wednesday. He defeated Blanshard Reeve John Scott and Wallace Reeve Merl Schneider in two ballots. Both reeves ran for the position last year losing to 1994 Warden Bob Mathers, of Elma Township. "I'm humbled and honored to be elected warden," Warden McKenzie told the other 13 reeves on council, past wardens and the crowd at the Perth County Courthouse. In the past, it was tradition that the reeve who lost the election on the first attempt would win it the following year. For the second year in a year, a newcomer to the race for warden has defeated two vet- erans to the race. Warden McKenzie, a farmer and photographer, said a new tradition may be developing. Both he and 1994 Warden Mathers chaired the administrative committee the year before they were elected warden. Last Thursday, Logan Reeve John Van Bakel was elected chairperson of the administrative committee for the upcoming year. In 1995, McKenzie said he expects council will "battle the effects of the recession." However, he feels confident council has experienced people to handle the challenges. All reeves, except three, are back at the council table includ- ing the three past wardens. During Warden McKenzie's term, the issue of the Stratford -Perth Museum will be resolved, he said. The issue has been a controversial one as some reeves are opposed because of the costs. The county commissioned a study into the feasibility of the museum. However, council has not yet considered its recommendations. McKenzie, a member of the Stratford Museum Board, said a task force will be set up to make recommendations to council. "I would expect this task force would have its results by budget time in 1995," he said. Michelle Grea,elMitchell Advocate SUPPORT FROM HOME - Warden Walter McKenzie of Hibbert Township, celebrated his election on last Wednesday with his four daughters: Kim (left), 12; Laura, 8; Emily, 3; and Jenny, 10. His wife, Sandra, Hibbert Council, and other members of his family were at the election, which was his first attempt at the top job at Perth County Council. McKenzie said the county and the City of Stratford would be required to contribute $112,000 a year to support operating costs under the current recommendations. "That's a lot of money when you're trying to hold the line. That's a cadillac of a proposal," he said. Nevertheless, Warden McKenzie said council must make a decision on the matter. "Either we're in or we're out," he said. In the upcoming term, Warden McKenzie said the county will continue working on municipal addressing in preparation for the implementation of 911 in 1996. He expects to deal with the impact of new planning changes coming from the provincial govern- ment as well as new long term care reforms. Several special guests spoke at the election of the warden, including former Mitchell Reeve Jim Spence who was also warden in SECOND PLACE - The house of Hugh and Bernice McPherson on North Main Street in Seaforth was one of the runners-up in the local Optimist Club's annual Christmas decorati • contest.
