Christmas potluck delicious feast
Rev. Banks opened the UCW
Christmas potluck supper by saying
grace and close to 40 people
enjoyed the delicious feast. The
basement had been festively
decorated by Audrey Hackwell,
Karen Hoegy and Kathleen
Williamson. After the meal and
clean-up, Phyllis Mitchell began the
evening with an opening prayer
then a `Christmas Service was
delivered by Dianne McCallum
(narrator), Barb Durrell (Innkeeper),
Gloria Love (Narrator), Marilyn
McDonald (Shepherd), Betty
McCaII (Joseph), and Berva Watson
(Mary). The service was
interspersed with Christmas Carols
played by Marie McGavin. The
business part of the evening was
then taken care of. Non-perishable
items were collected and they will
be given to the Huron County
Xmas Bureau in Egmondville (drop
off centre is Bethel Bible Church).
The group of ladies also welcomed
two special guests that evening,
Janie Ewing (a long time Walton
resident) and her daughter Beth
Read. Janie said that it is always
such a treat to come back to
Walton. A special gift box was
given to Rev, Banks and his family
for Christmas. The next meeting
will be Jan 7 at 1:15.
I must apologize too Lorne
Wernham for spelling his name
wrong in last weeks paper. I made
sure that I had his last name spelled
correctly and then I went and got
his first name wrong. Sony Loren,
I mean Lorne.
As I promised last week to have
further information on the new
business in Walton (Walton Small
Auto and Engine Repair) I went
and talked to the owner. His name
is Derek Pilatzke and he is from
Brussels. He had a similar business
in Brussels but needed more space,

friendly lad welcomes everyone in
to check out his business.
Walton Public School kids played
to a full house on the Dec. 8 and
were glad that they held the concert
in the Church so as to
accommodate the crowd before the
show began by playing music on
the piano and violin. The
Kindergarten classes did their
Rudolph and Jingle Bells dances
and sang, 'Christmas is coming'
and `S -A -N -T -A'. Grade ones
opened the show with their play,
"Santa's Sleigh.' Grade two had a
little presentation called, 'Three wee
Kings'. Grade 4 had fun
performing, `Boo -Bear' and The
Night before Christmas. After the
classes had delivered their plays the
school choir lead by Mrs. Scott and
accompanied on the piano by Mrs.
Vandendool, sang two selections;
'When A Child is Born' and 'A
whole new world.' Mrs. Crocker
thanked everyone for coming out
and hoped that they all enjoyed it.
She thanked all those that
volunteered to help out with the
concert. The Senior and junior
Kindergarten classes have a pet
hamster named Bob in their tlass.
Since it gets cold in the school on
weekends Mrs. Viven suggested
that the kids take turns taking him
home. This weekend a very excited
Cassandra Banks got to take him
home. He is very friendly and I
never thought that one could form
such an attachment to a rodent but
she sure has as well as the kids in
her class.
A surprise 50th birthday party
was held for Alan Brown this past
week. His children, Sharon, Richard
and wife Mandy and Gavin and
wife Roseann and grandchildren put
on the party. Mandy made the cake
and Alan's grandson Nathan made
a Peterbuilt truck out of icing for it.
Alan enjoyed all the family and
friends that showed up for the
ply. Happy Birthday Alan.
Graeme and son Michael Craig
were greeters at Duff's United
Church Dec. 11. The song, 'Light
one Candle' was sung while Becky
Brown stood up in the middle of a
wreath made up of children, to
represent Advent candle one.
Melissa Badly stood up as Candle
number 2 and Mary Beth Brown
was Candle number 3. Heidi
McClure and son Darrell read the
Candle lighting liturgy and then
Darrell lit the pink candle (candle
of love). Rev. once again
announced that there will be a
Xmas Eve service in Walton at 7:30
and he will be in Bluevale as it is
his turn to be there this year. There
will also be a Xmas day service in
Walton at 10 a.m. and Communion
will be served. The New Year day
service will be held in Bluevale so
there will be no church in Walton
on the Jan. 1. Also, on Dec. 19,
starting at 7 p.m., there will be a
Christmas Carolling and a Hayride
for the Sunday School children and
families. They will be going around
the village singing and will accept
donations which will go towards the
Recreation club for the buying of
lights for the ball diamond and for
the Walton School Fundraising
program that hope to update their
playground equipment. Hot
chocolate and goodies will be
served after the carollers et back.

Rev. Called all the children
forward and read them part of the
story, 'A Gift of Oranges', by
Beatrice Fines. His sermon was
titled, 'A Merry Repentance'.
Wondering what kind of a Xmas
card he would get from Paul or
Zephaniah, two of the three biblical
persons in the lectionary readings
today, Rev. figured that they would
be uplifting and triumphant and
proudly displayed on the mantle.
However if John the Baptist sent
him a card it may go as follows
"Season's greetings. In this season
of joy, my hope and prayer is that
you will repent! You brood of
vipers! The axe is laid to the root
of the trees and every tree that does
not bear fruit will be cast into the
fire, His winnowing fork is in his
hand to clear the threshing floor
and to gather wheat into his
granary; but the chaff he will burn
with unquenchable fire. Have a
merry repentance and a new year of
changed behavior." Rev. wondered
if he might not take John off his
Christmas card list. John would
seem to be in league with Scrooge
and the Grinch in throwing a wet
towel on all; of our seasonal jollity.
John is not one to soften the
message that he felt called to give.
He says it un apologetically,
pitilessly and urgently. We need to
hear John's message in order to get
the message of why Christ's birth is
so important. In the readings it is
the Soldier and the tax collector
that are willing to face their
unacceptable moral behaviours.
Before we can experience the
fullness of Xmas joy, we will have
to recognize our need for God's
mercy, forgiveness and
Reconciliation. As John might say,
'this Christmas, have yourself a
merry little repentance.'
