The Huron Expositor, 1994-12-07, Page 13Bachert top scorer for SDHS team
This past weekend, the senior
boys basketball team travelled to
Banting for a tournament. They
played the host team Friday night
and graciously let them win 71-31.
Brian Bachert was the higher scorer
with 14 points. Saturday morning
they played against De Pain Court
from outside of Chatham. The
seniors won the game 62-49, and
advanced to the consolation final
against Oakridge. Jason Murray had
16 points, Brian Bachert 13 points,
Scott Leonhardt - 13 pts, and Dylan
Wick 11 points. The final game
played Saturday evening was a
close game until the fourth quarter,
when Oakridge opened with a lead.
The final score was 63-43 for
Oakridge. Jason Murray had 12
points and Scott Leonhardt had 11
points. The boys host Clinton today
(Wednesday) with game starting at
12:30
The senior girls went to Medway
and despite fan support lost some
close games. Their fast games were
against Lucan, when they split the
two game set. They then played
against Montcalm for a berth into
the semi-finals. The girls handled
them with ease and were passed on
to the next round. In the semi-finals
they played against Lambton-Kent
(from Sarnia). Two games went to
16-14 for Lambton while Seaforth
took the other.
Congratulations to all SDHS
athletes for an excellent beginning
to the winter season of sports. An
apology goes out to Rebecca
Broome who was missed from the
seniors girls roster in last week's
article, as she played in Dorchester
as well!
The senior girls Huron -Perth
Al!star game is at 8 p.m. Thursday
(tomorrow), with the juniors at 6.
Admission is $2 for adults or 2
non-perishable food items, proceeds
are going to the Huron Christmas
Bureau.
Lakers sink Seaforth, Cents win at home
A late mistake took the wind out
of Seaforth's sails as the league -
leading Lakers sunk them 5-2 in
Ontario Hockey Association Junior
"D"evelopment League action at
Port Stanley Saturday night.
Out -of -position goaltender Tim
Swan couldn't have picked a worse
Laker to mis-play the puck to with
about three and a half minutes left
in the game while the Centenaires,
still coming on strong, enjoyed a
two-man advantage, as defenceman
Mark Steele potted a "gimme" goal
to go with his previous four assists
and end all thoughts of comeback.
The loss left Seaforth with a
weekend split after they dropped
the North Middlesex Stars 6-4 on
home ice Friday. The Centenaires
were in action last night (Tuesday)
at Mitchell against the arch -rival
Hawks but results were not
available at press time.
They next host Lambeth at the
Seaforth and District Community
Centres Friday night at 8:30 p.m.
before travelling to Mt. Brydges
Saturday for another 8:30 start
against the Bulldogs.
With half their regular schedule
now completed Seaforth now owns
an 8-11-1 record and has a tenuous
hold on sixth place in the light
nine -team Western Division race.
BIRDS AWAY! Daryl Young of Egmondville lets the old frozen
turkey fly at the Seaforth and District Community Centres Friday
night as the Ontario Hockey Association junior Centenaires'
introduced a new between -periods festive 'Turkey Bowling'
promotion.
Last year in the middle of their
schedule they were four points
better and in fifth place at 9-8-3,
had scored four fewer goals than
they have this season but given up
a whopping 32 fewer, with all-stars
Atoms win consolation
On Sunday, Dec. • 4 the Seaforth
Atom II team travelled to Dundack
to play in a 'C' Division Rep Tour-
nament where it won the consola-
tion title.
The team must have had a touch
of jet lag as they faced York Mills
in the first game. After an even first
period that saw Scaforth down 4-3,
York Mills scores six unanswered
goals sending Seaforth to the conso-
lation division. Scoring in the game

Determined not to be sent home
empty handed, Seaforth came to
game two with fire in their hearts.
Trailing 1-0 after one period, the
local squad quickly took a 3-1 lead
in the second. With good
goaltending and solid defense,
Seaforth coasted to a 5-2 victory.
Scoring came from Kris Meidinger
(3) and Tim McClure (2).
Excellent goaltending by Joe
Tuncy and Kyle Teichert kept
Seaforth in the final against
Chatsworth. After some hectic
moments the final buzzer went and
Seaforth held a 4-3 advantage.
Curtis Wilson was named game
MVP with two goals. Also scoring
was Tim McClure.

Steele was in on every Laker goal
Saturday. Last year he was a
unanimous Eastern Division all-star
and ended up with 46 goals and
104 points, second only to fellow
Laker Scott Faulkner, who ended
up with two goals and another two
assists Saturday.
Swan had been steadier than usual
before his mental mistake and the
Centenaires played far better than in
their previous two starts against the
Lakers, in which they were
clobbered and outscored 21-7 in the
process. Newcomer Lee Gibbings,
from Clinton, and veteran Chad
Ranier, with his first goal of this
season, did the Seaforth scoring.
The battered and bruised Cents
went through a mountain of
trainer's tape and ice this weekend
and were short-staffed Saturday
with Jason Murray (basketball),
Mike Lauwaert (bruised shoulder),
Scott Wright (knee), Jason Cook
(broken hand), Chad Papple,
Brandon Corriveau (work), Jason
Beuttenmiller and Greg Matthison
all out of the lineup.
Friday night at Seaforth Jeff
Flanagan didn't let a badly bruised
and heavily taped hand slow him
down, scoring two crucial goals and
adding an assist, as Seaforth
survived a shaky first 10 minutes in
their own end to grab the much-
needed two points. Steve Geiger,
Kalen Carroll, Jason Henderson and
Tim Barton also lit the light for the
locals.
