The Huron Expositor, 1994-12-07, Page 9Community Province may freeze hospital spiending BY TIM CUMMING Expositor Editor Seaforth Community Hospital may have .to operate next year without any increase in funds from the province. "We're operating on the basis we will receive the same funding next year as we received this year," said Bill Thibert, Chief Executive Officer. The Ministry of Health had not officially informed the hospital about funding but members of the Board of Govemors suggested last Tuesday that the hospital will be 'flatlined' after hearing a speech by Health Minister Ruth Grier. Several hospital board and admin- istrative staff members heard Grier speak at a convention of the Ontario Hospital Association in November.'Flatlining' would mean the hospital will receive the same funding for the '95-'96 fiscal year as the '94-'95 fiscal year. The province wants the hospital to submit its '95-'96 operating plan Feb. 24. * A charitable foundation has been approved by a branch of the federal government for Seaforth Commun- ity Hospital. Approval for the charitable body came last month. The foundation, which will be a registered corpor- ation, will apply for a charitable registration number in order to accept donations. Seaforth Communityj-lospital will keep its own, separate number so donors can contribute directly to that institution if they desire. The initial directors for the foun- dation, which will act as a fundraising arm of Seaforth Com- munity Hospital, are Alf Ross, board chairperson Marlen Vincent and Chief Executive Officer Bill Thibert. Additional directors may be added in the future with the approval of the hospital's Board of Governors. An initial meeting will probably be held in the spring, said Thibert. The federally -chartered foundation helps protect donations from any possible interference from the prov- incial government, said Thibert. "There is a fear the province will look at the money hospitals have," he said. No final decision has been made on the selection of a site for the proposed water tower for the Seaforth PUC, Seaforth Community Hospital was told in a letter. Engineering consultants B.M. Ross informed the hospital Board of Governors that the Elizabeth Street site would be the least costly but that there were other factors to consider. * * * Tin panette >c Canal ent. a Cuway View of Ear Our is happy to announce that we are currently fitting a com- pletely in -the -Canal hearing instru- ment. Shown here with one of the new beds are Jackie van Belle, of Jackie's Donuts, and Bill Thibert, Chief Executive Officer of Seaforth Community Hospital. The new electric beds allow patients to adjust their beds themselves without help from medical staff providing more independence. Some of the hospital beds being replaced are more than 30 years old. Thibert said the new beds are much more comfortable and convenient for patients. He said it's positive to see funds from the tickets benefitting activities in the community. Seaforth Community Hospital had a small operating deficit of $10,093 at the end of October. Combined with the use of an emergency reserve the hospital had a surplus. The Ministry of Health Emerg- ency Services Branch will be billed the remaining $11,000 for the cost of the emergency helicopter landing pad (which is entirely funded by the province). 'Nevada' tickets for Seaforth Community Hospital have already raised enough money for two elec- tric beds. Sales of the tickets at Jackie's Donuts & Muffins in Seaforth between late January and late November totalled $14,000 for the hospital. Two electric beds will be pur- chased at a total cost of $6,000. The remaining funds will be used towards other capital potvhases. • * * * There is a concern about what impact long-term care reform will have on existing organizations like the Victorian Order of Nurses, said Bill Thibert, Chief Executive Officer of Seaforth Community Hospital. He noted at last Tuesday's Board of Governors meeting that newspa- per commentators have suggested the long-term care changes will 527-0430 e QOBVIOUS give preference to employees. unionized The people of Brussels and area are pleased to have two doctors delivering increased medical service at a clinic in that community. said Dr. Mark Woldnik at last Tuesday's meeting of Seaforth Community Hospital Board of Governors. Dr. Woldnik and Dr. Janet Zeuel are travelling to Brussels for appointments in that municipality at a new clinic started last month. „NEkGNBOVR HatpkN U NekGHgOR (69 1879-1994 INSURANCE FOR FARM, RESIDENTIAL, COMMERCIAL & AUTO • NO MUTUAL CE COMPANY YOUR LOCAL AGENTS Frank Foran, LucknoW, 528-3824 Lyons & Mulhern Insurance Broker Ltd.
