Students and teachers at Seaforth
District School will have to find
somewhere else to 'light up' due to
stringent new anti-smoking legisla-
tion by the province.
The school principal and Seaforth
Police Chief, however, warned
students not to smoke near people's
private property where they would
infringe on their neighbour's rights.
They were speaking at a student
assembly which started with a
'mock funeral' for a student who
'died' from smoking-related causes.
Smoking is now codified in the
rules of student behaviour, Principal
Jim Moore told the assembly on
Friday.
"Smoking is not permitted on
school property at any time, it's
that clear," he said. "There is no
designated smoking area on school
property."
Seaforth Police Chief Hal Claus
said if students are found smoking
in front of people's houses he
would consider laying charges from
various pieces of legislation.
"It's a stigma on you as a person
(to be charged)," said Chief Claus.
He said if students smoke near
people's residences "you may find
yourself a pain in the butt so butt

Teacher Betty Jinks told the stu-
dents that in cooperation with the
health unit there were programs to
help smokers stop smoking.
School staff emphasized at the
assembly that they are just enforc-
ing legislation from the government.
The assembly, however, had a
definite anti-smoking tone as a
coffin carrying student Manny
DeSousa was brought to the front
and an 'eulogy' read.
