The first couple of years most of the time was spent on learning the Sten and Bren guns, ocassionally picking up guns dropped off by allied airplanes, always at night. Twice he helped allied flyers who were shot down to escape to Belgium where they were picked up by special units. In March, 1945 he received an identity card in case they were caught by the Germans, they were to be held as prisoners of war. But any underground fighter that was caught was shot immediately, maybe first tortured to get information. With the liberation May, 1945, he fought in Hengel, defending a factory and the electricity central. Two of our unit got killed there but the Germans did not have enough time to demolish it because they did not let them in. Tom Gemmell Verne Graham * Wm.A.
