New fire safety standards
for apartment owners
By the first day of Fire
Prevention Week (Oct. 9-15)
apartment owners with as
few as three units will have
to have their buildings
upgraded to new, more strin-
gent fire safety standards.
"A lot of owners don't even
really know about it," says
Seaforth area Fire Chief
George Garrick.
Building owners can face
fines of $25,000 in the case of
an individual and $50,000 in
the case of a corporation.
Even a jail term is a
possibility.
Houses with two residential
units are already responsible
for installing and maintaining
smoke detectors.
Apartment owners who
want to know if they meet
standards can contact the Fire
Chief or the Office of the Fire
Marshal at the phone number
listed under the Ministry of
Solicitor -General and Correc-
tional Services in the blue
pages of a telephone direc-
tory.
