The Huron Expositor, 1994-09-21, Page 35• 111-T141 HURON exros TOR• $sptewrsr IS, 1994 Entertainment j\ Helix front man to perform in area BY DAVID SCOTT Expositor Staff The lead singer from one of Canada's most successful rock bands is bringing his new group to a local bar to perform. Brian Smith of Seaforth, manager of Active Talent Agency in London, has booked Brian Vollmer and 7 Year Itch as the first act to play in the revamped Red Maple Inn in Vanastra which is opening soon under new management. Vollmer has been the lead vocal- ist for the Canadian rock band Helix for the past 19 years. Helix earned themselves two platinum albums (for Walking the Razor's Edge and Long Way to Heaven) and four gold albums over their career. They still get together to play once a month. But don't go to see 7 Year Itch if you expect to hear Helix tunes. The two bands are separate, says Vollmer. His new band has only been performing live for four weeks but has been doing well. "It's good- time rock and roll." 7 Year Itch does all cover material including music by the Black Crows, Rolling Stones, Van Morrison, Bad Com- pany, Grand Funk and Stone Temple Pilots, to name just a few. The music 7 Year Itch plays is directed more at the libido than delivering a social message, said Vollmer. "If you're looking for 'slash -your -wrists' lyrics and 'manic depressive' music, you've come to hear the WRONG band," states a press release for Vollmer's band. There will be no cover charge for Brian Vollmer and 7 Year Itch who play on September 30 and October 7 YEAR ITCH - Brian Vollmer of Listowel, lead singer of the Canadian rock band Helix, brings his new band, 7 Year Itch, to the Red Maple Inn in Vanastra on September 30 and October 1. Other members of the band are London natives Rob Long (drums), Bill Gadd (guitar) and Tony Palleschi (bass). 1 at Red Maple. "We're featuring everything from tribute bands to dance classic rock bands (at Red Maple Inn)," said Smith. For the first two to three months, he'll try to put in as many 'Class -A' bands as possible with no cover charge. "I think people in this area are getting sick of cover charges," said Smith. Vocal Training When Helix started slowing down about four years ago, lead singer Brian Vollmer started looking for something else music -related to do. "Teaching (vocal training) seemed like a natural thing to do," said the Listowel -area native. Vollmer sought out his former voice trainer for advice. Edward Johnston of Fergus has taught Canadian singers Ian Thomas and Daniel Lanois to name just a few. Johnston was the youngest member ever of the New York City Opera Company, said Vollmer. Johnston gave the Helix front man two hours of instructional informa- tion on tape. Vollmer took the vocal lessons back to London and virtual- ly memorized the entire tape. "As a teacher you learn every day. I became more fluid," he said. Vollmer's pupils are not limited to future rock and roll singers. He offers vocal training to folk singers, members of choirs, country and western singers and those interested in rock and roll. The technique Vollmer learned from Edward Johnston and has passed on to his students is belle canto. "It's the same technique used by (world famous opera singer) Luciano Pavarotti." Why does rock and roll veteran Vollmer think young vocalists should receivo.proper training? "(If they don't) they're going to destroy their voices." He listed such big rock and pop names as Rod Stewart and Whitney Houston, who have both had oper- ations for nodes on their vocal chords. As well, Billy Joel, Axel Rose, Stevie Nicks and Annie Lennox have experienced problems ',due to improper singing techniques. Talent agent Brian Smith of Seaforth has also encountered promising young singers who burn their voices out because they aren't properly trained. "Things like that can be avoided," said Smith. "A proper vocal technique will not change your voice. But it will "allow you to explore the parameters -Sof vocal range, dexterity and tonal control," said Vollmer. Currently the lead vocalist from 7 Year Itch teaches one day a week in London, Cambridge and Hamilton. Vollmer said he would consider teaching as close as Exeter if enough interest was shown.
