TRIATHLON COUPLE - Darrell Dietz and his wife, Marianne,
have both competed in Half -Ironman triathlons. In a few weeks
Darrell will compete in the Ironman Triathlon World Championship.
Dietz heading to Hawaii
continued from front page
"It takes
a lot of commitment on her part. I
couldn't do it without her support,"
said Dietz.
Helping with Darrell's training is
Barry Shepley of Toronto, coach
for the Canadian National Triathlon
Team who also has his own training
company, Personal Best. Shepley
started him on a training program
and schedule in May to work
toward the Ironman race in Octo-
ber.
He has been training on a three-
week cycle where each week gets
progressively more difficult. Then
when he starts again on week one,
it's a little more strenuous than his
previous week one. He works out
six days in a row and has one day
off. Dietz has been swimming three
times a week, cycling twice a week
and running three to four times a
week. The toughest day he had
recently involved biking as hard as
he could for two hours, then
immediately running 18 one -mile
intervals with a brief rest between.
That type of interval -training is the
best preparation for a full triathlon,
says Dietz. He casually mentioned
biking from Dublin to Benmiller
and back for 'practice' like it was a
walk downtown to the store.
The completion time for Ironman
World Championship winners is
just over eight hours. The average
time for completion of the course is
13-14 hours. Dietz hopes to com-
plete the course in 11 and a half to
12 hours. In a half -triathlon in
Ottawa this summer under ideal
conditions, he completed the race in
a time of four hours and 53 min-
utes.
Is he prepared for the race of a
lifetime?
"I feel like I'm ready for it. It
puts a different perspective on
someone who trains their whole life
for an Olympic event," said the
Dublin native.
There are three factors Dietz says
will have a bearing on his race: the
wind, the heat and swimming in the
ocean (which is an unknown for
him). Unlike the other triathlons
he's been in, participants in the
Ironman competition are not
allowed to use wetsuits in the water
(which give you more buoyancy).
He will also have to remember to
take some sunscreen with him to
splash on after his swim. One part
of the bike race involves travelling
through lava hills; rolling hills of
dark, hardened lava rock. Last year
temperatures in the lava hill section
of the race rose to 113 degrees
Fahrenheit.
Dietz has future plans of compet-
ing in the annual Canadian Iron
Man competition in Penticton and
maybe one of the other Iron Man
competitions held annually in Ger-
many, Japan and Australia. Another
goal for Darrell and Marianne Dietz
is to compete together in an Iron
Man competition.
Friends of Darrell's who have
competed in the Ironman Triathlon
World Championship in Hawaii,
have said, "It's as close to the
Olympics as you'll get."
