Local team tied in first place
On Sunday, Sept. 18, the St.
Columban Men's Soccer team
ventured to London to play the
London Central Americans. With
perfect playing conditions St.
Columban put forth a strong team
effort and left the field with a com-
manding victory.
The visiting team would open the
scoring early despite having to start
the game one man short. Steve
Ryan grabbed the ball inside the
eighteen -yard box and placed a shot
off the post and into the net to give
his team a one goal lead. St.
Columban's eleventh man, Jim The
Ferret' O'Reilly showed up shortly
after and the team finished the half
up by only one goal.
In the second half St. Columban
came out very strong and would
prove to be tough for the Central
Americans. They would get their
second goal of the game when
Dave Murray placed a free kick to
the six-year line which enabled
Brian Melady to head the ball past
the opposing keeper. Minutes later,
the visitors would go up by three
when Steve Ryan made a nice pass
across the crease that would help
Nehru Budna get his sixth goal of
the year and extend his goal -scoring
streak to four games.
It would not take long for St.
Columban to get their next goal as
five minutes later, Steve Ryan made
a long rush down the right side and
got his second goal of the game
after chipping the ball over the
keeper and into the net. A few
clicks of the clock later, Steve
would set up his brother, Bill Ryan,
who got his first goal ever for the

extended to Sandy and Gladys Doig
for the beautiful flowers they have
contributed to the tables over the
summer tournaments and to Fred
and Betty Tilley as drawmasters.
In out-of-town tournaments the
duo of Fred Tilley and Erich
Matzold placed second at the men's
pairs Charles Hendy Tournament at
Exeter Greens. Brett Finlayson with
sister Brenda Empey were success-
ful in winning the Bankers tourna-
ment in Clinton on Saturday. Fred
and Betty Tilley were seventh with

peted in this toumament which had
been rained out earlier in the sum-
mer.

men's team. Bill was elated that he
was now in the big leagues scoring
goals like his brother 'Rock'. After
the Central Americans added one
goal of their own St. Columban
would finish the scoring when
Brian Melady headed a perfect pass
from Bill Ryan into the net and the
game ended with the good guys
winning by a score of 6-1.
Although it was a superb team
effort, special honours should go
out to Dave Murray, Jason Van der
Velde and both Ryan brothers who
all played excellent games. It's also
worth mentioning that Wayne Ryan
,played the whole game under -the -
weather as he apparently had caught
.a bug the night before. The whole
team wishes 'Rug' Ryan a speedy
and complete recovery.
With this win St. Columban is
tied for first place with London
- Curinga although London does have
one game at hand. A loss by
Curinga in either of their last two
games would ensure the division
title for St. Columban. The team's,
final regular season game is on
Saturday, Sept. 24 at 5 p.m. in
Mitchell. Everyone is more than
welcome to attend the game which
may turn out to be the first place
clincher. Come out and support the
guys.
