Government approves toddler program for children's centre BY DAVID SCOTT Expositor Staff The Seaforth Co-operative Children's Centre is one of the first children's centres in Huron County to receive its license for a new toddlers program which begins September 6 for children 18 months to 30 months (or two and a half years). The co-op recently received approval from the Ministry of Com- munity and Social Services. Parents have the option of a morning or afternoon toddler program or a full- day. The only other licensed pro- gram for toddlers in Huron County is in Goderich. Under Ministry guidelines for the implementation of a toddlers pro- gram the children's centre installed a change table, toilet and sink inside and an outside play area with special equipment suited to the sire of the children and meeting safety requirements. The old playground was divided to create space for the toddlers. A fence separates the two areas so pre-schoolers won't be able to play in the toddler area. All playground activity is supervised. With the introduction of the tod- dlers program, the co-op now offers services for three different age groups: Toddlers; Pre-school - two and a half to six years old; School- age - six to 12 years old. The teacher for the new toddler group will be Linda Feeney. Mary Verberne overseas all three pro- grams as Program Supervisor. Initially the children's co-op offered only a pre-school program. The centre, in conjunction with the Huron County Board of Education and Seaforth Public School, con- ducted a survey to determine if there was a need for programs for different age groups. "It showed there was a need for Schedule Seaforth Co-operative Children's Centre Daily Schedule for Toddlers 7:30-8:45 - Greet children - free play. 8:45-9:00 - Washroom routine, dress for outdoors, greet half-day children. 9:00-9:40 - Active/outdoors 9:40-10:15 - Free play 10:15-10:40 - Wash-up time, snack time, washroom routine 10:40-11:15 - Creative, dramatic time. 11:15-11:30 - Circle - Stories, songs, cognitive games, dis- cussion. 11:30 - Half-day children go home. A child-care in a younger age group as well as school-age children," said Administrator Shirley Brooker. Beginning in January of this year, the centre introduced a school-age program for.six to twelve -year-olds. The children arrive at the centre before school and return after school. "It's our only program that's always full," said Brooker. The reason the school-age group is set at six is because it is not mandatory to send children to jun- ior kindergarten (J -K) or kindergar- ten, according to Brooker. Schools receive a per diem for each child enrolled in kindergarten classes. • Although parents have to pay to have children attend the children's centre as opposed to sending them to J -K or kindergarten, the ratio of students to teachers is a lot smaller at the co-op. The pre-school age ratio is one teacher to every eight students. In J -K or kindergarten it's about one teacher to every 20 or 25 students, said Brooker. For the new toddlers group the ratio is one teacher for every five students. The ratio for the school-age program is one to 15. The new toddler program is 70 per cent full. The children's centre accepts registration throughout the year, said Brooker. Board of Directors The Seaforth Co-operative Children's Centre is a non-profit operation with an executive com- posed entirely of parents who make decisions about the centre's future. The group is the Entrepreneur's Association/County of Huron (EACH). The idea for EACH came from Susan Earl Halfpenny, owner of Susan's Sewing of Seaforth. EACH is primarily a group for people who are new or prospective business owners or entrepreneurs. Support and information are key goals of the group, according to Halfpenny. "It's nice to know someone else has the same problems you're run- ning into," she explained. The business group is five months old and there are currently about 10 people active in the group. Halfpenny is also assisted by treasurer Sybille Schaufler, of Comp -Account Computerized Accounting of Hensall and Heather DeJong of Heather. Ann's Creative Hands in Seaforth. The business group provides a network which has not been avail- able for new business people, according to the person who came up with the idea for EACH. looking at bringing in different speakers," said Halfpenny. On July 27 MPP Paul Klopp was a speaker at the group informing . them of Farm Plus, directed to farming -related business and other business-related government pro- grams. The Huron MPP was told at that meeting that the -absence of some high-tech phone features are a handicap in areas such as Hensall, Seaforth and Clinton. The need for this business group was felt by some business owners who attended a small business seminar hosted in Hensall earlier this year by the Hensall Economic Development Committee and other bodies. The group is for both men -and women who are interested in busi- ness information, emphasizes Half- penny. "We're trying to meet the needs of men and women in business," she said. The group meets each fourth Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. at Clinton Public School Library. For further information on EACH call Susan Earl Halfpenny at 527- 1617 or Sybille Schaufler at 262- 3431.
