Cents tie Bulls
Area hockey fans who haven't
had a chance to watch the
Devereaux boys since they played
here with the Seaforth Centenwres
a couple of seasons back will get a
chance next Tuesday night when
Boyd and Mike return with the
Stratford Cullitons to play an
exhibition game with the Seaforth
juniors.
Game time is 8:30 at the Seaforth
and District Community Centres.
The Cullitons open their
Midwestem Junior B Hockey
League season the following
weekend but the Centenaires, who
play in the Ontario Hockey
Association's Junior 'D'
evelopment League, don't get
officially rolling until September
30.
Boyd in particular has blossomed
in Stratford since playing with the
Cents as a willowy 14 -year-old,
shooting up in height and putting
on a lot of beef. He was the
Cullitons' Rookie of the Year last
season and some bigger -league
scouts arc watching him closely and
singing his praises. Some of this
season's impressive rookies the
Cullitons may have in their lineup
include imports Jeff Halpern and
Mark Murphy from the Boston area
and Eric - Anderson and Adam
Patterson from Detroit.
Meanwhile the Centenaires
opened their pre -season schedule by
hosting the Western C League's
Brussels Bulls to a 5-5 tie in Friday
night's 'Rookie Game' at the arena.
Brandon Corriveau paced Seaforth
with two goals and an assist. Jason
Murray, Jeff Flanagan and Jason
Smith with a shorthanded goal
rounded out the Seaforth scoring.
Judd Leonhardt and Adam Agar
each played half the game in the
Seaforth net.
Steven Henderson had two goals
and an assist to pace Brussels.
The Centenaires, now two weeks
into training camp, have filled 10 of
the 30 cards they were issued and
still have roughly 35 players in
camp vying for remaining positions.
They play their second pre -season
game this Friday night at
Thamesford against the Trojans, a
perennial JDL powerhouse in its
Eastern Division. They have made
it to the league's 'Final Four' for
the past seven seasons, which
includes a record run of three -
straight OHA championships from
1989-92. Thamesford willalso
return the favour by playing in
Seaforth for the first time in the
Centenaires' final exhibition game

Aikens clan
holds large
family reunion
One hundred and twenty descend-
ants of Jas. and Alice Forbes
Aikens auended the first family
reunion held in Lions Club Com-
munity Park, Dublin, ON, Saturday,
August 27 1994.
Members of the Aikens clan
attended from Toronto, London,
Florida, Calgary, Hamilton,
Kitchener, Waterloo, Fort Erie,
New Liskeard, Blind River, Owen
Sound, St.. Thomas, Niagara Falls,
Scarborough, Sarnia, Chatham and
surrounding area.
Registration began at 1:30 fol-
lowed by getting acquainted, visit-
ing and browsing through photo
albums and memorial card book.
The Aiken's family tree and
history book was presented at this
time which includes six generations
and was compiled by Jean Aikens
Durst and her able assistants Ann
Kucyk and Marilyn Horne.
Back in 1868 when Jas. Aikens
came to Ontario from Nova Scotia
he first settled on Con. 2, Logan
Twp. in a log house and small barn..
When property on Highway #8,
Lot 32, Con. 7 Logan, East of
Dublin which was at that time
called Carronbrook and later named
Dublin, ON came up for sale Jas.
bought this 100 acre farm and
married Alice Forbes July 25, 1878.
Alice was born in Hibbert township,
Perth County one mile south East
of Dublin. they raised their family
of 11 children on this farm.
Jas. Aikens died Oct. 21, 1922 at
age 84. Alice passed away July 28,
1924.
The farm was bought by son
Reuben and farmed by him until his
retirement in 1967 when it was
taken over by his son Lome and is
now occupied by great-granddaugh-
ter Ann and husband Victor Kucyk.
Jas. and Alice are buried in
Woodland Cemetery, Mitchell, ON
As they worked with this history,
they became acquainted with their
ancestors in a way that makes them
feel proud to belong to those fam-
ilies who were hard working, hon-
est, dependable people who had a
deep faith in God.
They have left a rich inheritance
as a result of their labours in this
new land...and the family can pass
it on to future generations with
pride.
These sturdy pioneers did their
part well in helping lay the founda-
tion of this community, then one by
.one they were taken and one by one
`' . their places filled and so on down
the line until now they have a part
to play.
A moment's silence was observed
in their memory.
At 5 p.m. a delicious pot luck
supper was served and enjoyed by
all, followed by a short business
meeting.
Kathleen Greenside of Fort Erie
volunteered to act as president and
Kathleen Aikens of Mitchell as
Secretary for the next reunion. The
second Aikens Reunion to be held
in Dublin August, 1996.
Prizes were given out to the
Oldest Lady - Pearl Hoffmeyer,
Oldest Gentleman - Ted Hoffmeyer
of Mitchell, Youngest Child Shylie
Henry, two weeks old, from
Chatham. Farthest distance - David
Hanson of Calgary. The oldest car
belonged to Clifford Aikens,
Mitchell. Baseball Quiz - Karen,
Mike, Steven Thiel of Brantford.
Closest guess as to number of
jellybeans in the jar, Lorne Aikens,
Mitchell.
The children enjoyed games con-
ducted by Dawns Durst and also
the children's playground in the
park.
A picture -taking session ended a
very happy and successful reunion
followed by fond goodbyes after a
making a lot of new acquaintances
and looking forward to meeting
again in Dublin in 1996.
