Looby family honours late priest with marble plaque BY ANDY BADER Advocate Editor A Dublin native will forever be remembered in his hometown church. Father Arthur Rynold Looby, who died last October, had a marble plaque unveiled in his memory by his family Sunday during a special memorial mass held at St. Patrick's 'Roman Catholic Church in Dublin. Father Looby's niece Maureen Looby, of Sarnia, was the main organizer of the memorial mass, and during its installation Saturday, said the marble came directly from Italy and was part of the altar from Father Looby's final parish at St. Eugene's Chapel in Toronto. She said that since his funeral was in Toronto, this would be a way to remember him in his hometown. The commemmoration marks his vocation with the priesthood as well as the Looby family name, which has been prominent in Dublin for many years, she said. "He was very much connected with Dublin," she said, noting that Father Looby would return to visit family members at least once a month. Father Looby, who would have marked the 48th anniversary of his ordination Monday (Aug. 15), was born in Dublin in 1915. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Louis J. Looby, he attended the former St. Patrick's Separate and Dublin Continuation School before attending Assumption College in Windsor. He was ordained a Basilian priest at St. Basil's Chapel in Toronto on Aug. 15, 1946 by the late Cardinal J.C. McGuigan, and he celebrated his first mass at St. Patrick's in Dublin on Aug. 19, 1946. Following his ordination, Father Looby taught at Aquinas Institute in Rochester, New York; St. Thomas High School in Houston, Texas; St. Joseph's High School in Ottawa; Assumption College in Windsor and St. Michael's College in Toronto. In 1959, he joined the Canadian Armed Forces as one of their mili- tary chaplains, serving at Canadian forces bases in Clinton, London, Toronto, Trenton, Kingston, Petawawa, Edmonton and Holberg, B.C. He retired from the armed forces in 1978, and served as rector of St. Eugene's Chapel in Toronto where he served 450 families. While at St. Eugene's, he wrote a popular his- tory of the parish entitled The Flowering Of A Community.' It also detailed the history of North York Township. During the memorial mass Sun- day, sisters Muriel Trou, of Clinton; and Ally Goettler, of Dublin, and a large number of nieces and nep- hews were in attendance. Father Tony Del Ciancio officiated. Father Looby was predeceased by four brothers: Joseph, Clayton, Clarence and Louis, and one sister, Loreen Curran, formerly of Ottawa. Seaforth rejects grant to St. Columban soccer club A request for financial assistance from the St. Columban Minor Soc- cer Association was reviewed again by the Finance and General Gov- ernment Committee of Seaforth Town Council and denied. According to the finance committee's report from August 2, "the Soccer Club built a new soccer field that exceeded the budget they had set by 200 per cent. The Recre- ation and Parks Committee sym- pathized with the Club, however they felt that the new soccer field in St. Columban was out of their jurisdiction." • TOWN OF SEAFORTH PUBLIC UTILITIES COMMISSION CLASS ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT NEW WATER STORAGE PUBLIC INFORMATION MEETING The Town of Seaforth Public Utilities Commission is planning a project to construct a new elevated water storage facility.
