The Huron Expositor, 1994-07-27, Page 13'T Entertainment Play combines comedy, drama BY TIM CUMMING Expositor Staff It wouldn't be fair to label Bounc- ing Back situation comedy. There is too much reality and pain in the Blyth Festival production to suggest it is nothing more than a light, funny piece. It would be hard to believe any member of the audience would not know someone like Brenda, the unhappy 40 -something daughter who struggles through a string of broken marriages, or Kate, the feisty old lady who won't give up on life. Anyone who has had family troubles or anyone who fears get- ting old will relate to the poignant message of Bouncing Back. Having said that, there are lots of chuckles in this original play and the opening night audience laughed heartily and often. The world premiere play, written by Suzanne Finlay, starts off slowly but builds strongly as the play progresses. The powerful, dramatic comedy succeeds because the char- acters are so true-to-life. Anne Anglin is convincing as the old woman from Newfoundland who resents being placed in a nurs- ing home and is angry at her daughter who wants to sell the mother's home and its ccintents. Even Nancy Beatty, who appeared to lack confidence on opening Blyth adds new Barn shows Due to the exceptional demand for tickets, the Blyth Festival's 20th Anniversary Season production of Seaforth-bom Ted John's perennial favorite He Won't Come In From The Barn will be held over for an additional seven performances, from September 6 to September 10. Here, Nancy Beatty (as Brenda) makes a surprise discovery in her mother's attic. night, was entirely believable as the daughter who struggles with her stubborn mother. One of the true joys of this pro- duction is watching Jerry Franken as `Shicky.' In Franken's perform- ance, less is more as he portrays the quiet Mr. Schicherowski with depth and subtlety. In the play, the audi- ence can believe wholeheartedly that Franken is an elderly man of Polish descent.. This new play is not without flaws. Some of the jokes are more clever than others and the produc- tion relies too heavily on mono- logues. In the end, however, it is driven by powerful characters and smart writing. Bouncing Back appears at the Blyth Festival until September 3. Cullitons edge Seaforth Cents Goaltender Matt Barnes robbed Scott Wright from point blank range in the . dying seconds to preserve a 3-2 win for the Stratford Cullitons over the Seaforth Centenaires in exhibition junior hockey action at the steamy Lucan arena late last Wednesday. No Culliton defencemen was close enough to do anything but watch and Wright had Barnes 'dead to rights' deep in the slot, and got off a quick and heavy shot. But the diminutive all-star goalie from Stratford was equal to the task with his exceptional glove hand, and showed why he led the Midwestern Junior B Hockey League in goals against average and set league records for wins and shutouts last season. It was the first exhibition game of the '1994-95 season for both teams. The Centenaires also play in the Ontario Hockey Association, but in McLaughlin Chev-Olds Ltd. 13 Main St. Seaforth. 527-1140 •Service •Selection •Savings •Satisfaction •Leasing •Complete BODY SHOP Service WINNERS The Brodhagen Chamber of Commerce wishes to thank all the people that attended the Chicken BBQ & participated in the elimina- tion draw. David Nahrgang also played a gambling but effective game in the Seaforth net, a big reason the score remained so close. Steve McInally and Jason Hayter scored for the Cents. Jason Parks scored twice for Stratford and JoJeff Dunbar got the other. Brent Hulley of Egmondville played a solid game behind the Centenaire blueline. The game, which didn't start until 10:30 at night, was surprisingly watched by about 100 fans. Players on both teams seemed to have difficulty finding their skating legs, not to mention their lungs, which was understandable considering many hadn't been on skates in months and if was a hu mtlit'30-plus degrees outside. The two teams tangle in another exhibition on September 13 in Seaforth. The Centenaires open regular training camp in a month. Exact times and places have yet to be decided.
