ANTS
Mark Coulthard
Ants are not only the traditional nuisance of picnics, but they can also be a com-
mon problem on home lawns. Ants do not feed directly on the grass plants. The
problem is the ant hills that they make in the lawn. These nest mounds result in
uneven turf and can ruin the appearance of the lawn.
Ants can also be a problem when they venture onto patios and indoors.
Fortunately ants can be controlled for a small period of time with a recommended
insect control material The insect control should be applied to the entire turf area.
If only the ant hills are treated. the ants will move to infest the untreated section
Ants are a nuisance in the lawn and on-going treatment is necessary for complete
control

St. Columban soccer club ties Stratford
On Wednesday, July 20, the St.
Columban Soccer Club travelled to
Stratford to play the men's team
representing that city. Stratford
plays in the Kitchener District
League, therefore it was the first
time in several years that the two
teams have met.
Stratford had only lost one game
to date. They opened the scoring on
a through pass that split the St.
Columban defence and set up a
breakaway. Stratford controlled the
majority of the play in the fust half.
The second half was much
different as St. Columban's physical
play and constant pressure wore
down the Stratford team. Eventually
Dave Murray broke through only to
be hauled down outside the penalty
box. Dean Martin drilled the free
kick to the right corner around the
wall to tie the game. The exhibition
left both sides satisfied with a 1-1
tie.
On Friday, July 22, London
United travelled to Mitchell for
their first two encounters of the
year. St. Columban dominated the_.
play drilling two shots off the cross
bar in the second half. However, in
one of London's few visits to the
opposing end, they headed in a
corner kick for the lead.
In the dying minutes the home
side had a player ejected for over -
aggressiveness. Despite this, they
managed to tie the game in the 90th
minute on a long pass from Dave
Murray at centre who drove a long
through pass to Steve Ryan in
London's penalty box. Steve was
dragged down and Dean Martin
scored on the penalty to finish the
game in a tie.
Sunday, July 24 was supposed to
be a game for first place with
London Curinga, however, the
referee was unable to attend and a
satisfactory replacement could not
be found in time. The team wishes
to apologize to all those who came
to watch and were disappointed.
The next home game, is Monday,.
August 1 at 5 p.m.
Team members are: Jim O'Reilly,
Mark Muir, Jason Dietz, Wayne
Ryan, Jason Vandervelde, Mauro
Mascioli, Brian Melady, Dave
Murray, Jamie Yantzi, Mike Seiler,
Mark Martinez, Nehru Budna, John
Jordan, Dean Martin, Paul Murray,
Mike Murray, Steve Ryan, and Joe
Murray.

REVERSE SLIDE - Starla Wick, top, of the Seaforth Novice II girls
fastball team, narrowly misses a tag on a Harriston player on her
way back to third base at a recent exhibition game. The Seaforth
team qualified for the Provincials by placing second at Chatham.
Seaforth ball team
heads to provincials
submitted by
Coach Georgina Reynolds
During this past weekend fourteen
girls, their families, and four
coaches travelled to Chatham with
only one thing in mind: They
wanted to qualify to play in the
Provincial Women's Softball
Association's tournament in Niagara
Falls on August 5-7. Their work
was cut out for them as then other
teams had the same idea.
The draw was definitely not in
Scaforth's favour as the first team
they were to meet was Windsor.
This was the only team in the
Novice 11 division to beat Scaforth
this season. After a well played
game Seaforth found themselves on
the losing end of this game. This
meant that they now had to work
their way back up from the bottom
of the draw.
They next met Chatham and St.
Marys, both on Saturday. This
strong team showed no mercy for
either of these teams.
Sunday morning once again saw
Seaforth playing Windsor. This was
the most important game for
Scaforth and Windsor. The winner
would go on the loser would go
home. After much pacing, nail
biting, hair pulling, and cheering,
Seaforth emerged victorious, but the
team still hadn't qualified for the
provincials. They still had to win
one more game.
The next game was against
Oakridge of London. This game
was definitely not as tense as the
Windsor game. With this win the
Seaforth Novice 11 girls qualified
for the provincials. They had
achieved their goal. But wait,
they're not finished yet.
Their next opponcnt was Sarnia.
More excitement was in store for
the fans. Sarnia was winning until
the seventh. With home team
advantage Scaforth again pulled out
the win. This meant they still had
another game and possibly two.
How much more heat and pressure
could these girls stand?
In the gold medal game Seaforth
was to fact Byron. This was
Byron's first game of the day,
fourth of the tournament. This was
Seaforth's fourth game of the day,
seventh game of the tournament.
The girls' strong character and
excellent skill level again showed
through in this game. Once again
they tied this game in the seventh
inning. This meant extra innings.
Unfortunately a home run in the
ninth ended the game with Byron
taking home the gold, Seaforth the
silver.
Good luck to all these fine young
athletes in the Provincials. Bring
home the gold girls.
