Wedding insurance?
It protects against unexpected problems that can wreck the day
What happens if the pho-
tographs don't turn out?
What if my dress is ruined
before the big day?
What if my fiance or some-
one in one of our families
falls ill - or worse?
You've got car insur-
ance. You've got health insur-
ance. You've got house (or
contents) insurance.
But you've probably
never thought of wedding
insurance.
However, weddings
are a very anxious time. Every
detail of planning - from the
gowns to the guests - seems
like an accident waiting to
happen.
Everybody has either
experienced or hear about
wedding day disasters. Nobody
wants to have to think of what
might go wrong with a wed-
ding.
In fact, nobody wants
to think anything could go
wrong with their wedding in
particular.
And that's why
Weddinguard was devel-
oped. It's a specialized insur-
ance package developed by
the Calgary -based Party
Alcohol Liability (PAL)
Insurance Brokers Ltd., and
underwritten by Pafco
Insurance Company Limited.
PAL president Bob
Mo 1son brought the idea
back from Great Britain, says
Pat Foley, a customer service
representative with PAL.
'It's very popular over
there,' he adds. PAL has car-
ried Weddinguard for two
years. During that time they
have sold about 25 policies,
but until recently it wasn't pub-
licized much.
About' a month ago,
PAL began advertising the
package on radio, television
and in newspapers.
'Now we're getting a
lot of calls,' says Foley,
although many of the callers
so far are mainly calling to
confirm that there really is
such a package, he adds.
However, some people have
thought of Weddinguard in a
rather unique way: they've
bought a policy as a wedding
gift for someone, he says.
Weddinguard is a spe-

clalized package, so local
insurance brokers don't carry
it. But they can arrange
Weddinguard coverage for
local clients.
We've never had a
request for it," says insurance
broker Heather Lyons, of
Lyons & Mulhern,.1The pack-
age is available through Lyons
and Mulhem, which repre-
sents Pafco. What they usually
deal in is lots of stag and doe
coverage, insuring both the
person organizing the party
and the property where it's
being held.
Robert Westlake, of
Westlake Insurance, Zurich,
says he's never had a request
for this type of insurance and
never sold a package.
While he doesn't
know how many companies
offer wedding insurance, he
said he is familiar with the
Weddinguard package sold
through Pafco and believes the
idea has some merit, given the
investment involved in plan-
ning a wedding.
"It might not be a bad
idea. Why not?" he said,
adding that he doesn't believe
the concept has ever been
heavily promoted and few are
probably aware it is available.
However, Westlake
cautioned that anyone consid-
ering purchasing this type of
insurance check with their bro-
ker to ensure that coverage
and limitations of the policy
meet their particular needs.
Steve Consitt, a bro-
ker for Gaiser-Kneale
Insurance Brokers in Clinton,
says he's never personally sold
any wedding insurance.
—Because of the striaU-
town atmosphere, he says,
there is less likelihood of wed-
ding day disasters in this
areas.
'Down by your bigger
centres, it would be more of a
problem,' says Consitt.
People can insure
their wedding gifts under their
homeowners' insurance, he
says. Liability insurance Is also
available.
I've sold part liability
insurance,' he says. 'It's just
insurance against, say, 0
somebody gets hammered and
goes home and wraps himself
around a tree.'
Under the wedding
insurance liability, there is a
disclaimer which says the
insurance doesn't cover bodily
injury or property damage
which occurs after the hosts
provide alcoholic beverages -
so it might be prudent to take
a separate policy if alcohol is
to be served.
