Atoms need tie to clinch series
On Tuesday, Jan. 25, the Seaforth
Atom I's travelled north to Durham
to start their playoffs.
Durham netted the first goal early
in the opening period. Seaforth tied
it shortly after with a goal by Dean
Wood, assisted by defensemen
Ryan Willis. With 12 seconds left
the Seaforth team took the lead.
Jason Anstett netted this one with
assists going to teammates Derek
Nesbitt and Daniel Nash.
The Seaforth boys kept things
moving on into the second period.
Four more Seaforth goals w
scored to Durham's one. Scoring
for the Seaforth team this time was
Derek Nesbitt with two and Jason
Anstett and Kyle Henderson each
with one. Credited with assists were
Daniel Nash (2), Ryan Willis (3),
Jason Anstett (1) and Derek Nesbitt
(1).
Seaforth now had a four goal lead
heading into the third period.
m
Durhamanaged to narrow it down
to two, until Seaforth scored one of
their own. Right winger Curtis
Wilson put the puck between the
pipes on a set up by Jason Anstett
and Derek Nesbitt., The final score
was Seaforth 7, Durham 4.
Due to lack of ice time at our
home arena the second game of the
Atom series was played in Clinton
on Sunday, Jan. 30. It wasn't until
the 2:58 mark when Seaforth's
Derek Nesbitt put one past the
Durham goaltender. Daniel Nash
e-re,,and Derek AkeLassisted, however
iOrdr only 48 seconds remaining
Durham scored to tie.
In the second period, Durham
netted three and Seaforth two.
Goals were popped in by Anstett
and Nesbitt. (Assists - Nash,
Nesbitt, and Anstett).
A quick goal to start off the third
period, by the Anstett-Nesbitt duo
put the boys back in contention.
The game was now tied. Durham
seemed to pick.4 tempo and the
Seaford]. started to scramble.
The opposition scored four unan-
swered goals to put them well in
the lead. Seaforth's Jason Anstett
did manage to put - one more in the
net before the buzzer sounded
ending the game.
The third game of the Durham-
Seaforth Atom series was held
Tuesday, Feb. 1 in Durham. The
final score was a tie 4-4 after three
full periods and a ten minute over-
time. Sorry, no details available.
Game number four of the
Durham-Seaforth Atom series was
held on home ice Saturday, Feb. 5
at 6. The fans did not have to wait
long for some quick scoring.
Durham netted a goal at 13:05 and
Seaforth answered back at 10:55.
All it took was for Seaforth to get
on the scoreboard. They picked up
momentum and by the end of the
first period had scored two more
goals.
The second period was a bit more
challenging. Seaforth took a two
minute tripping penalty and Durahm
cashed in by scoring on their
powerplay. The opposing team then
tied the game. Seaforth's passing
plays payed off and they pocketed
the puck before the end of the
period to take the lead once again.
In the remaining period, three
more goals were notched for the
home team. Seaforth's team was
backed with excellent goaltending
which saved the bell more than
once. Final score Seaforth 6,
Durham 3.
The Seaforth Atoms will travel to
Durham on Tuesday, Feb. 8 at 7 for
game number 5. Seaforth needs a
win or tie to clinch the series. Good
luck!
Novice I loses in third period
If hockey was a game played over
just two periods instead of three,
the Seaforth Novice I's would be
very difficult to defeat. In most of
the Novices losses this season it
was a third period letdown that
contributed to defeat. Games on the
weekend, both at the Bothwell
tournament and in league action
against Goderich, followed the
pattern.
Last Friday, the Novices opened
the Bothwell Tournament with an
impressive 4-0 whitewashing of
Clearwater. Jason Denys set up
Steve Carnochan, and Carnochan,
playing his best hockey of the
season, slammed home what proved
to be the winner with 45 seconds
left in the first period. In the second
•
period, Denys upped Seaforth's lead With plenty of scoring chances and
to 2-0 and it was Camochan and stellar goaltending on both sides,
Mark Flanagan who set up their neither team scored until well into
right-winger. Greg McGrath the third period.
increased Seaforth's lead to 3-0. Josh Holland drew first blood for
Kyle Devereaux and Billy Gridzak Seaforth by tapping in the rebound

with linemates Barry Young and Del Vecchio. In less than a minute

tournament.
Sunday night it was Goderich's
turn to steal a game for Seaforth
with a strong third period. Josh
Holland gave Seaforth a quick 2-0
first period lead. Holland's first
goal was unassisted and Joey
Nesbitt set up the second goal.
Goderich responded with one and
the fust period ended with Seaforth
in the lead by 2-1. Steve Carnochan
increased the margin to 3-1 with
Jason Denys getting the assist.
After that it was all Goderich scor-
ing. Goderich tied the game in the
second and scored two unanswered
goals in the third for the 5-3 win.
The Novices practice at their
regular -5:30 time on Wednesday.
Sizzlers win two on the weekend
This past weekend the Seaforth
Sizzlers ringette team won two
Huron -Perth league games,
defeating Forest 7-1 and Stratford.
On Saturday, Feb. 5 the Sizzlers
travelled to Forest for their home
and home series against the Forest
"B" squad. The Sizzlers called up
Jessilyn Carnochan and Jenny
Ducharme from the Petite 'C' team
to fill in for Jessica Finlayson, who
is injuNioand Marsha Denys who
was representing St. James School
in a basketball competition. Excel-
lent play by the Forest goaltender
kept Seaforth scoreless for the first
ten minutes but with five minutes
left in the first period Kim
Devereaux fired one upstairs, unas-
sisted, to finally put Seaforth on the
scoreboard. Jenny Ducharme passed
to Becky deVries who put one into
the net along the ice to give
Seaforth a 2-0 lead at the half.
In the second half, Kim Deveraux
scored her second goal unassisted,
followed quickly by a goal by
Jenny DelVecchio, assisted by
Jenny Ducharme. Becky deVries
then scored two in a row, the first
assisted by Melissa VanBakel and
the second by Jenny Ducharme,
assisted by Jeanette Crowley and
Jenny DelVecchio. It looked like
Seaforth goalie Sarah Agar was
going to have another shut -out but

Exciting tykes hockey
The Seaforth Tykes provided
spectators with their most exciting
hockey of the season as they met
their arch -rivals Stephen Township
and Monkton.
SEAFORTH 2
STEPHEN TWP. 2
On Saturday, Feb. 5 the Seaforth
Tykes played Stephen Township at
the Arena. Callahan O'Reilly
opened the scoring for Seaforth on
a nice set-up from Bradley
Henderson and Brendan Murray.
Stephen Township knotted it up
shortly thereafter but Bradley
Henderson put Seaforth ahead with
assists by Callahan O'Reilly and
Brendan Murray. Stephen Township
tied it up with seven minutes to go.
In the last minute the Tykes applied
heavy pressure and just narrowly
missed the decisive goal. Ryan
Nurse played an excellent game on
defense but the two stars of the
game were Stephen Township's and
Seaforth's goalie's. Matthew Dalton
played solidly between the pipes to
keep Seaforth in the game.
SEAFORTH 2 • MONKTON 2
On Sunday, Feb. 6 the Tykes
played at home against their long-
time nemesis Monkton. The high-
flying Monkton squad opened the
scoring but David Verbeme tied it
up on a breakaway set up by
Matthew Carnochan and Tyler
Elligsen. The g iys then went ahead
2-1 on a close m score by Callahan
O'Reilly assisted by Bradley
Henderson and Brendan Murray.
Just when it seemed like a victory
was in sight Dwight Smith scored
his second of the game to tie it
back up again. This really got the
Monkton gang fired up and because
of the excellent defensive play of
Adam Broome, Brittany Williams,
Ryan Nurse and Stephen Medd
combined with the spectacular
netminding of Matthew Dalton.
Seaforth with stood the furious
Monkton onslaught in the dying
minutes of the game. The Tykes
practice on Saturday. Feb. 12 at
11:30 and meet with Brussels Sun-
day, Feb. 13 at the Arena at 2:30.
Make an effort to come out and
watch some truly exciting and
entertaining hockey.
