Alice plays at Stratford Festival in '94 Alice and Cyrano join Hamlet, Othello, Pirates and others at Stratford this year. The Stratford Festival has recently released its 1994 lineup for the Festival, Avon and Tom Patterson theatres. Aside from the traditional Shakespearian performances of Twelfth Night, Hamlet, and Othello, there will be a modern interpreta- tion of The Comedy of Errors that "takes Shakespeare's Elizabethan farce right to the hub of '90s teen culture." The Avon Theatre will stage a new adaptation by James Reaney, from the classic children's book by Lewis Carroll, Alice Through the Looking Glass. Sarah Polley, of CBC's Road to Avonlea, will play Alice who finds herself in the fan- tasy land reflected in the mirror and encounters a dizzying array of extraordinary characters. Sarah Polley In "Avonlea" The timeless romantic tale of Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmond Rostand will be presented on stage at the Festival Theatre in a new translation by John Murrell. "Blessed with passion, wit and intellect, yet plagued by physical deformity, Cyrano deems himself unworthy of the affections of Roxane, thus denying them both the true love they desire." The Pirates of Penzance, Gilbert and Sullivan's lightheated operetta of love, honour and camaraderie will run from June to November at the Festival Theatre. Eugene O'Neill's Long Day's -- Journey Mw Night will run from May to September at the Tom Patterson Theatre. A family's eter- nal love -hate relationships are explored in this revealing journey into the dark recesses of the human mind. A new play by Jean -Marc Dalpd and translated by Robert Dickson entitled In the Ring will play this summer at the Tom Pauerson The- atre. This gritty tale is about a small town boxer who tries to make it while his uncle, a washed-up trainer and manager, clings desper- ately to lost dreams. A double -bill of Moliere com- edies will be performed at the Festi- val Theatre from August until Octo- ber. The School for Husbands and The Imaginary Cuckold are plays of "daring deceits and fortuitous mis- conceptions conspiring to unite true lovers." As well as an impressive lineup of plays, Stratford will present a Celebrated Writers Series through- out the summer featuring lectures, readings and discussions by award- winning authors including Margaret Atwood, Timothy Finlay, Robertson Davies, Kurt Vonnegut Jr. and others.
