STRANDED - Several trucks had to waft patiently for Highway 8
from Seaforth to Goderich to reopen last Thursday afternoon.
Poor weather forced the closing of several area highways.
Neighbours, ambulance help
with arrival of area ne*born
BY MICHELE GREENE
for Signal Star newspapers
Not even Old Man Winter could
stop Jennifer Diemen when she
decided to enter the world.
Jennifer is the 7 lb., 8 oz. baby
born to Corinne and Tony Diemen
of RR 2 Staffa, a mile and quarter
south of Cromarty, last Thursday at
8:15 p.m. She is also two-year-old
Andrea's first sister.
At 2:30 a.m. Thursday morning
the highways were closed, the snow
was blowing, and Corinne's water
broke.
"It was snowing and blowing like
crazy outside," she said from her
home on Monday.
Despite the weather, Jennifer was
born with the help of neighbors, a
road grader, an ambulance, and a
doctor.
Corinne was due on Jan. 9 and
the family had a plan. Corinne's
parents from Seaforth were suppos-
ed to drive to the Diemert's home
to watch Andrea while they were
gone to the hospital. Last Thursday
morning, that plan was called off
because the roads were too bad.
Instead, the couple phoned their
neighbors, Ivan and Betty Lou
Norris, to watch Andrea. Concerned
about the visibility, Ivan called
Hibbert road superintendent Gary
Kcmp to see if would escort the
ambulance to the Diemert's. Kemp
phoned the OPP who asked him to
help them reach the farm. This was
the second time he was asked to
assist emergency personnel. How-
ever, this was first baby he helped
medical personnel reach.
"There wasn't much snow but the
visibility was bad. There was one
spot, south of Cromarty, that would
have given them trouble," he said.
The Norris' went to the Diemert's
in the tractor and blower to see if
their driveway needed to be plowed
for the ambulance. Norris regularly
keeps their driveway cleared. With
a baby on its way, Norris kept right
on top of it in case they had to
leave in the middle of the night.
They found Tony shovelling some
snow from the doorway but the
driveway was clear enough. Norris
had plowed it just the day before.
Ivan and Betty Lou drove the
tractor and blower to the township
shed in case Kemp couldn't get out
of the driveway with the grader.
They headed home once they found
Kemp had left to meet the police
and ambulance on Perth County Rd.
10 at Hilribert Concession Rd. 4/5.
"(Ivan and Betty Lou) really
helped out a lot. We really appreci-
ate everyone's help," said Corinne
on Monday.
The Norris' led quite a convoy to
the Diemert's home early Thursday
morning. First, there was Ivan and
Beuy Lou in the tractor, followed
• by the grader, the police with
Mitchell's Dr. Greg Kenyon, and an
ambulance.
Dr. Kenyon explained the
Diemert's are patients of a St.
Marys doctor who asked that a
doctor go with the ambulance. Dr.
Kenyon got the call at 4 a.m.
Thursday and said the visibility was
poor on Highway 8 to Dublin but
worsened on the county road which
was heavily drifted. This was the
first time he had to go out in such
treacherous weather conditions on
an emergency call.
In the meantime, Corinne said her
husband Tony was doing, fine as
well. He made her lie down and be
still until the ambulance arrived.
"He didn't want to deliver this
baby," she laughed.
Corinne said she wasn't worried
about making it to the hospital until
she learned the highways were
closed. While he waited for the
police to pick him up, Dr. Kenyon
realized there was a good chance
the baby may be delivered at home.
"I was thinking about what I
needed if she delivered at home. I
dressed warmly and didn't really
think about the roads because I
knew the police were driving," he
said.
The Diemert's left for the hospital
with the ambulance at about 4:45
a.m. and Corinne was in the early
stages of labor. The grader led the
police, and ambulance as far as
Mitchell as Highway 8 was clear
enough for the • ambulance: The
police dropped off Dr. Kenyon in
Mitchell.
Meanwhile, Beuy Lou Norris
stayed at the Diemert's with
Andrea.
"She was up when we got there.
She understood what was going
on," she said.
On Monday, the Diemen house-
hold was getting back to normal, or
as close as possible with the new
baby around. Tony went back to
work at Fisher -Bearing in Stratford.
Corinne is now on leave from her
job at Valeo in Stratford.
And Andrea helps her mom
"sometimes a little too much" with
Jennifer, her mom says adding she
is happy to have someone new with
whom to play. Andrea got a toy
kitchen set for Christmas and is
anxious to have Jennifer play with
it with her, said Corinne.
