The Special Olympics and
Law Enforcement Torch Run
came to Goderich last week,
bringing with it, Huron
County's Special Olympic
athletes.
Starting in Wingham in
the morning, the athletes,
family members and law
enforcement officers ran and
walked a route -through the
town.
Huron County OPP Ser-
geant Russ Nesbitt, who is
also the Torch Run Coordi-
nator, helped organize the
route and the logistics of the
run.
"All together it's around
5km. We run through the
communities and bus from
town to town. At one time we
used to run the whole
distance, but now we like to
be inclusive so we run man-
ageable routes that every-
body can participate in,"
Nesbitt said.
"I would love to do more
places and bring in more
communities, but there is
only so much time that we
can do it:'
The athletes then travelled
by bus to Blyth and Clinton,
doing the same in both
towns, before coming to
their final town on their
Huron County Torch Run
tour - Goderich.
After the run and walk in
Goderich, the athletes were
bussed to the front lawn of
McGee Motors for a barbe-
cue lunch. It was during
lunch where Goderich Lions
Club President Gary Blenk-
horn and the District A9
Lions Special Olympics
Chairperson, John Stewart,
presented a cheque to the
Goderich Special Olympics
team. .
"[This event] is very close
to our [Gary and his wife's]
hearts, and I wanted to make
sure that they got the money,
so that the kids doing this
enjoy their time. I think it's
so special - every time you
see them doing the events
and taking part in the Olym-
pics, they just have the big-
gest smiles on their faces,"
explained Goderich Lions
Club President, Gary
Blenkhorn.
The Goderich Lion club
presented Connie Tasker,
coach with the Goderich
Sunset Strikers and Goder-
ich Seahorses, as well as a
Community Coordinator
with Special Olympics
Ontario, a cheque for S5,
000. Tasker has been
involved in Special Olympics
for 17 years.
