CBC's television series Still
Standing's name itself is a
perfect description of the tri-
umph of being honoured
two years in a row at the
Canadian Screen Awards,
with two additional awards
to add to their list of achieve-
ments; the unique history of
a small village neighbouring
Seaforth is to thank for one
of those decorations.
The show, produced by
Frantic Films, is the back-to-
back (2016 and 2017) win-
ner of Best Factual Program
or Series. Jonny Harris, with
his distinctive Newfound-
lander accent and comedic
aura, earned the title of Best
Host in a Lifestyle, Talk or
Entertainment News Pro-
gram as well as Writing in a
Factual Program or Series.
For the later, the award was
granted for the Vanastra
episode.
The executive producer of
Canada's far-flung series
about small sometimes for-
gotten settlements, Mau-
reen Riley said they were
given the choice of what
episode to submit.
"I chose Vanastra
because the town had a
great story; Jonny was
inspired by this story as
were the other writers," she
stated through emails.
"When the team is inspired
the work is good, and get-
ting the award just goes to.
show that."
Reminiscing about film-
ing from January 31 -Febru-
ary 5 in 2016 felt like a mil-
lion years ago, said Riley.
Although her memory is
somewhat fogged of the
Vanastra episode, she
recalled when they first
arrived in the rural land-
scape of Huron County.
"At first we were like, how
are we going to shoot this?
But then we saw the beauty
in all the standing buildings
and we were so excited

about the rich history," said
Riley, while also adding that
she considers herself an
army brat. "Jonny Loved the
military story and the pas-
sionate people that live
there. "
She said Huron East eco-
nomic development officer,
Jan Hawley, added a bit of
enthusiasm in the overall
storyline of the place that
once housed a top-secret
military base and imple-
mented Radar technology
that's believed to be a key
factor in ending World War
II.
"It shows small communi-
ties across Canada that have
had some challenges and
still do, but are still stand-
ing," Hawley said in a recent
interview.
Since the airing last year,
Hawley said there has been
some business activity
resulting in a boost in the
economy.
