MARCH IS EASTER SEALS MONTH 201
The annual March is Easter Seals Month campaign
focuses on raising awareness of the ongoing issues
and needs of children with physical disabilities and
how people can lend their support in their own
communities.
2017 marks Easter Seals Ontario's 95th anniversary
of providing programs and services that help kids with
physical disabilities focus on what they can do rather
than on their limitations. It also marks Easter Seals'
80th anniversary of providing fully accessible summer
camp programs. Thanks to the support of our donors
and sponsors, we are helping kids BE KIDS.
March is Easter Seals Month also marks the beginning
of Easter Seals' annual fundraising campaign.

Helping Kids with
Physical Disabilities
Succeed
• Canadians assume the government covers the cost of accessibility equipment. In
fact, government agencies cover only partial costs of some assistive devices required
for basic personal needs, and for some items there is no funding at all.
• Children and youth with physical disabilities face challenges on a daily basis, including
issues surrounding accessibility and lack of opportunities to socialize and participate
in recreational activities. For many, this results in feelings of social isolation, lack of
self-esteem and missing out on important personal and social milestones.
• For families, the cost of mobility and communication equipment is staggering and
children often need multiple items, such as wheelchairs, ramps, lifts and bathing
equipment among others. Many families do not have the means to provide the
essential equipment their child needs.
• Additional expenses for families include travel to out of town hospital visits,
renovations to make their home more accessible, additional therapy and costs for
caregivers. All of these can add up to more than $40,000 a year for a family with a
child with a physical disability.
• In 2016, almost half of Easter Seals families who requested financial
assistance had an annual family income under $40,000.

• On March 24 the annual Easter Seals Paper Egg
Campaign launches in retailers across the province
including Sobeys, Foodland, FreshCo, Price Chopper,
Avondale, Highland Farms, Booster Juice, The
Bargain! Shop and Red Apple. Shoppers will be
invited to purchase a Paper Egg for $2, which will be
displayed in-store for the duration of the three-week
campaign ending Sunday, April 16.
• On Sunday, April 9, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.,
the province -wide broadcast of the annual Easter
Seals Telethon will air on CBC and on local stations in
other communities across the province.
