Sheila Pritchard Freelancer The fate of the Marine Museum hangs: in the bal- ance as the'1'own ofGoder- ich awaits a decision: from council that will determine the museum's future, along with the town's role in that future. 'Ihe County of) luron cur- rently owns and operates the small museum located across from the Main teach in the wheel house of the "SS Shelter Bay" at the Goderich l 'arbour. Town of Goderich Chief Administrative Officer Larry McCabe says the town was recently advised. by Huron County that the county wants to remove itself from the operation of the Marine Museum due to declining Looking For Common Sense Insurance? The museum, which contains historical photo- graphs, paintings and var- ious ship models, along with nautical artifacts, including the ship's life boat, anchor, propeller, steam whistle, and com- pass, is dedicated to the men and women who tnade their living on i,ake lluron. "The County of Huron owns the Marine Museum and has artifacts in there, and they currently pay the ongoing operating expenses such as staffing and main- taining the artifacts," says McCabe. "however the county decided they want to turn that over to the town. 'i'he town is now faced with oderichsigna star.co what options they would have in regards to the future of the Marine Museum," McCabe says the issue has been referred to town staff to conduct a report, which will hien be handed over to council. "I presume that report, when it's fin- ished, will include the cost of operation, but more so it would be a reviewof the state of the current facility. In other words, from a health and safety perspec- tive, what is required for bringing it up to a more acceptable standard of. repair. 'Thoseare the things we'll bring in to council to decide." The options council will have to consider range from continuing operation as a museum to removing the building ,altogether. "Either it will be operated as a Marine Museum. through the town in some way, shape or form as an approved facility, and those costs would be assessed," McCabe says. "Or, council is going to look at some'other alter- native for it at the other extreme. What they would be considering, through the budget process, is do they remove the Marine Museum? So that's up to them. They need to look at all the options that are available." What the town will have to do, says McCabe, is look at what was proposed in its waterfront master plan for this year in relation to what (council! wants. "The' master plan included the Main Beach, the facilities and the boardwalks, all the way to the end at St: Christopher's Beach. So in light of the report that will come about the museum and the options available, council will look at that report and the master plan and say, 'Ilow docs this fit in to our future require- ments and what was pro- posed in the master plan?" All of that will be part of the discussion on this issue, says McCabe. He says funds have already been allocated in the 2017. budget for upgrades of pavilions, the first priority which was included in the master plan. "But there are boardwalks, and there are proposals of such things in that area as an amphitheatre -type (struc- ture]. So council will have to look at how that fits in to the master plan." Meighan Wark, Huron County Director of Cul- tural Services, says she is hoPeful the town will be able to make use of the museum in some way, "We would be thrilled to have the opportunity to pass the Marine Museum on to the Town of Goder- ich so they can work with it," she says. "I know that they've been working on a waterfront master plan, so this is something that might fit into the work that they'realready doing," "it's a council decision, we'll go from there, says McCabe, who expects to know more by the begin- ning of April when the final budget and further details should come forward. "How the recreation amen- ities fit with the industrial amenities will always be a consideration of council and town staff as we move forward." to a rewarding new career.
