Goderich Signal Star, 2017-02-01, Page 5Wednesday, February 1, 2017 • Signal Star 5 Huron Hurricanes break personal bests and meet Penny Oleksiak at swim meet On the weekend of January 20, 12 Huron Hurricanes travelled to the big city of Toronto to attend the TSC University of 'Toronto Winter Invitational Swim meet. The athletes brought home with them many successes and memo- ries; the club had a record-break- ing number of new personal best times achieved. To the surprise of the Hurri- canes, swimmer and Olympic Gold Medalist Penny Oleksiak was awarded the Lou Marsh 'Trophy Tween Crushers begin 2017 with xtreme win during the swim meet, the most prestigious award for a Canadian Athlete of any sport. Many 1lurri- canes were a little star struck as they watched the presentation up close on the pool deck. They were able to get autographs and photos taken with the famous swimmer. Senior girls Kayla, Sarma and Natalie competed with varsity swim- mers from many universities includ- ing former Hurricanes Kennedy and Natalie on the U of W team and Les- ley on the Brock University team. The U14 Ice Crushers began their sec- ond half of their competitive Western Region Ringette League (WRRL) season on Sunday, January 15th at the MRC host- ing a Forest Xtreme club that had beaten the Crushers on a controversial goal ear- lier in the season in Forest that still left a sour taste with the Goderich players. The locals came out very determined in this one displaying some excellent speed in their game dominating a For- est team that, at times, seemed con- fused. However, it took until the 8:50 mark before the "rookie line" of Ruby Olson, Kayleigh Goud, and, Camryn Austin capitalized for a 1-0 lead. Less than a minute later, with some good defensive work from Amelia Denomme and Shalen Kernighan, the home side increased their lead as Avery Cross and Payton Swan offered a great effort to set up Grace Taylor. The Crushers then, for some unexplained reason, seemed to stop skating for the remainder of the period, and, were fortunate to hang onto a 2-1 lead at the recess. If not for the strong play of Hannah Kent in goal, the Ice Crushers could have easily been downby2or3. In the final frame, the Tweens began to move their feet again, and, the strong play from the defence pairings of Ava Fitzgerald/Megan Kovats and Kiara Plumsteel/Giselle Mcllhargey really seemed to ignite the offence. At the 10:26 mark, the near sellout crowd at the MRC erupted in a frenzy as the hard working Michaela Alcock scored her first goal of the season to give her team some breathing room. Alcock, recognizing that her line mates Katie Ridsdale and Arden Bowler were really working the ring in the corners, took a pass in front from Bowler and pro- ceeded to rifle the ring past the help- less Xtreme netminder. Goud, followed quickly by Olson's second of the contest.stretched the Crusher lead to 5-1. When Taylor, on a great feed from Cross, scored her sec- ond to make it 6-1, Coach Simon Tay- lor knew his team was in good shape. A late power play allowed the visitors to sneak one past Kent, but, the Crush- ers were full marks in sending the Xtreme home with a 6.2 loss. Most memorable for the Hurri- canes might be swimming in the same pool and same event as World Silver Medallist and Bronze Olympic Medallist Kylie Masse. Kylie was the winner of the 50m Freestyle event.
