Nursing shortages experienced
throughout the Local Health Integrated
Network (LHIN) will have "significant
repercussions' in staffing specialized
services in area hospitals.
Citing a difficulty in recruiting nursing
specialists to rural areas, Director of
Patient Services and Chief Nursing Officer
at Alexandra Marine and General Hospi-
tal (AMGH), Cheryl Taylor, told the board
of directors at its monthly meeting that
nursing recruitment must be a highlight
of the hospital's recruitment process add-
ing that it's a huge issue for us."

specialty services we will be incurring

added costs,' she said. "We are doing our
best to recruit and there's threats to serv-
ices closing if there's no nursing services.
It's huge for us in rural areas to attract pro-
fessionals and difficult to keep people."
The hospital has had success in recruit-
ing seven new family physicians in the
past several years bringing to 13 the com-
plement of practicing family physicians.
And. while the area offers a quality of
lifestyle appealing to many healthcare
workers, "there is no drawing card" Taylor
said,
"It's difficult to keep people. This is a
good place to work but there is no draw-
ing card," she said. We cross train but
there is a barrier to employment and no
young people are staying."
Four nursing students will be starting in
January 2012.

School safety and contract talks will be
two key issues for the Huron -Perth Catho-
lic District School Board (HPCDSB) in the
upcoming year, says the board's new
chair:
Speaking at the board's inaugural Dec.
5 meeting newly acclaimed chair Bernard
Murray said he expected the next year to
be challenging, "as most years are", sin-
gling out two issues.
"One thing I think is so important now
is the fact that we have to make every stu-
dent feel safe in our schools and do what-
ever we can to make the environment
right," he told the board.
He also referred to upcoming contract
talks with .teachers in 2012, saying .that
".hopefully everyone works together for
the good of all."
Murray, who last served as HPCDSB.
chair in 2008, said the changes that have
taken place over the years have been
"amazing" and that he welcomes the
letter to the editor
Remarkable young
GDCI students make
a difference
7bthe editor,
Recently, the students of GDCI went
out into Goderich and surrounding
areas and collected food for the Huron
County Christmas Bureau.
It is the 18th year that GDCI students
have been holding this food drive and
the response from the community is
always the same. It is fabulous!
Even in a time when many people are
struggling due to the aftermath of the
tornado, the generosity of these special
citizens warms the heart and gives hope
to so many families that truly need this
assistance. Thank you to the people of
Goderich for always being there.
But even more incredible are the stu-
dents that do the legwork of collecting
chance to continue working with the
B.
"We serve these students first of all aca-
demically, physically, socially and spiritu-
ally,"
piritu-ally, he said. "I dunk that the board has
certainly done a good job over the years
and will continue to if we work together."
Murray hasbeen a trustee since 1986.
He has served seven terms as board chair,
including his current term
Newest trustee Amy Cronin, who joined
the HPCDSB after the 2010 elections, was
acclaimed as vice -chair of the board.
"It's always really important to me that
lids are getting the spiritual direction they
need and top-notch education in Ontario"
she said after the meeting.
Trustee Tim McDade was acclaimed as
chair of the education: committee, while
Ron Marcy will head the management
comms tee. Mike Miller will chair the per-
sonnel committee and serve on the Spe-
cial Education Advisory Conunittee. Mur-
ray and Marcy agreed to sit on the audita
committee for another year.
At the Dec. 5 meeting, the board also
approved the appointment of Donnelly
and Murphy as board solicitors and the
appointment of 8130 Dunwoody as board
auditors.
the food. More than 150 of our young
volunteers took pat and gathered
enough food to fill two pickup trucks
and a very large trailer.. This yeaz they
were lucky to L Ave. decent weather
because in past years they have battled
through snow, rain and very cold tem-
peratures. It is quite rewarding to see so
many students contributing and enjoy-
ing the experience at the same time.
They should be proud of themselves
because we, the staff at GDCI, certainly
are!
And just to put the icing on the cake,
one of the student groups that went col-
lecting were assigned an area that could
not contribute a great deal of food.
These remarkable young people took it
upon themselves to go to the grocery
store and buy in excess of S100 worth of
food, out of their own pockets, and
donate it to the Food Drive.
It appears out future is in good hands.
Sincerely.
