This will truly be a significantly different holiday season for many as residents continue to attempt to rebuild their lives and homes and put some sense of normalcy back into their rou- tine. But Christmas will be anything but normal for many In the town and area who have suffered losses and look to rebuild their homes, businesses, farms and lives. However community spirit has always been in plentiful supply as evidenced by the strong support for the town's annual nee lighting ceremony in Courthouse Park followed by the Santa Claus parade. The participation was heart warning as the town's heart light shone bright through the barren and stark appearance of the Square. This holiday season, it will be incumbent upon everyone to support their family, friends and neighbours who may be struggling to find the posi- tive spirit in the holiday season. It will also be especially important to support the local business community who have been hit hard and yet have made determine attempts to either relocate their businesses or rebuild to continue to provide valuable services and goods to. the community. Goderich. I had never heard of it but my family had and said it was beautiful. Some people said we may not be wel- come as a couple but from the first meet- ings with realtors and bank staff, we knew this was a great place. Unfortunately, due to work, we are leaving to move to Guelph. We hate to leave and especially now with what the town has been through, but we know we are taking a part of Goderich with us and leaving a part of us here. We have never lived in a town that is so united, that would drop what they are working on to help. To our past neighbours, Gord and Lois, to our present ones, too many to mention, we thank you for making us one of your family. To Goderich, our family, we hope you grow and prosper. We will be back and will keep and eye on you. Sincerely Barg Lawrenceand Ann Public policy should aim away from war To the editor, Kitchener Area Monthly . ,.eeting of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) believes that public policy, as well as the lives of individuals, should aim to take away the occasion for war. Therefore, we oppose the Canadian government's proposed pur- chase of 65.F-35 joint -strike fighter jets. The procurement of joint -strike aircraft not only falls to reduce thessibili of armed con- flict, it ties Canadianoli y to future mili- tary tary intervention overseas, without public discussion of the ramifications of this major shift in Canada's role in world affairs. We call upon all political parties to use the opportunity presented by tne:contro- versies surrounding the purpose and escalating costs of the F -35s, the lack of con- clusive testing on the planes, thelack of current needs analysis of the air force, and the lack of a competing bid process, to envi- sion a foreign policy in which Canada becomes a leader in conflict reduction. Karen Melady, Patrick Capper, Gordon Chiddicks, Jim and Janet Papple, Tony and Fran McQuail, on behalf of the Lucknow Area Worship Group. This Worship Group holds Quaker Meetings for Worship in Huron County and is under the care of Kitchener Area Monthly Meeting. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Signal Star welcomes letters to the editor.
