wn's 'tornado bylaw: which
lers of properties damaged in
1 tornado to rebuild on exlst-
rints even if the use of the
does not conform to the zon-
town's official plan, cleared
ction period this week. The
bylaw also allows for businesses dam-
aged in the storm to relocate to other
premises on a temporary basis.
With the bylaw in effect, council
approved several site plan agreements
with local businesses allowing for
developments to proceed at 60 West
Street, owned by architect Allan Avis;
the Bluewater Body and Fender busi-
ness on Picton Street owned by Ray and
Jason Cook, a car wash operation on
Britannia Road East owned by•Maurice
Gardiner and lames Leddy and the
Union Burger site on Victoria Street
owned by Franchise Group
incorporated.
In addition to approving the plans for
the developments, council also unani-
mously endorsed a motion from Coun,
Jim Donnelly to waive the security
deposit normally required with the
submission of site plans. The deposits
required range in cost from $5,000 to
$10,000 depending on the scope of the
plan.
"I think it's an important matter of
principle and these people have
endured thetrauma of losing their busi-
ness and have now become our phoe-
nix of renewal and rebirth," he said.
"These people should have our encour-
agement and support. I suggest we
demonstrate our gratitude and support
by waiving the security deposit fee"
The development plan presented by
Avis for his property at 60 West Street
across from town hall calls for a two-
story structure as stipulated in the Her-
itage Act, that would feature commer-
cial development on the lower floor and
apartments on the second floor.

Given the quality of the proposals submitted,
Van Amersfoort recommended that the most
effective way of determining which firm would
be best suited for work with the community was
through an interview process.
The interviews with the five remaining con-
sulting firms took place November 7 and 8 with
the interview committee consisting of Deputy-
mayor John Grace, Coun. Michele Hansen and
Planning Director Scott Tousaw. Mayor Deb
Shewfelt was added to the interview committee,
which will make a recommendation at the Nov.
14 meeting of town council.
A public meeting was attended by about 100
residents on Sept 24 as the town solicited ideas
and input from citizens on their vision for
reshaping and rebuilding the town's people
places. It was clear at the meeting that residents
were looking for the town to take the opportu-
nity to develop a comprehensive plan to rebuild
Its green spaces and parks.
