"This is a special occasion. The com- bat troops have returned from Afghani- stan and it is an opportunity for us to recognize their service. We don't want history to repeat. Over 26,000 Canadian fought in the Korean War that ended in 1954 and 5000 were killed but there was no recognition. Yet, they put their lives on the line." Branch 109 has planned a traditional Remembrance ceremony to take place at the Cenotaph at 12:55 p.m. on Satur- day Aug. 20. A colour party will march from the legion to the cenotaph and Laurie and Lincoln Dinning of Wing- ham, parents of Cpl Mathew Dinning who was killed in action in Afghanistan in 2005, will be on hand to lay a wreath at the cenotaph as memorial Cross Par- ents (formerly recognized as Silver Cross Mothers). Following the ceremony, there will be an open house at the branch on King- ston Street where members of Legion and general public are invited t drop in and offer thanks to the soldiers and their families. "We shouldknow the relevance of their service to global security and national security as well, " president Thorne said. "There will be special pres- entations and we will offer thanks to the soldiers and their families." The Royal Canadian Legion is extend- ing heartfelt thanks to service men and women and their families and the municipality of Goderich has embraced the initiative and a number of big, yel- low bows are popping up all over town in support and recognition of the mili- tary effort. The town's municipal build- ings will display ribbons and bows and others are encouraged to do the same. The national Words are Not Enough Campaign is designed to express thanks to soldiers for their commitment and dedication to Canada's military role in Afghanistan. Goderich Branch 109 and its mem- bers are hoping for a large turnout of veterans, families and interested citi- zens who want to take the opportunity to recognize the efforts of those who serve in Canada's military. All veterans of Afghanistan who would be interested in participating in the day's events are asked to contact the Branch at 519-524-9282 or President committee to set criteria for heritage funding ounty is a step closer to ow best to dole out grants increasingly popular Huron id. ;ommendation of cultural ctor Meighan Wark, council- to appoint two councillors, ellan (Huron East) and john Huron), to a new commit- be entrusted to set out the applications to the $20,000 f what types of projects and s are an acceptable fit for the Coun. George Robertson (South Huron) expressed concern about what the creation of a new committee would mean to the county's.bottom line. "Who would be volunteering?" he asked. "Are we going to pay someone $3,000 to allocate $20,000?" "This is not a big expense by any means," argued MacLellan in defence of the motion. He also suggested that the committee, which is designed to meet twice a.year, meet on days already desig- nated for county council or committee sessions, which proved to be a sugges- tion that ugges-tion.that Robertson supported: In His Honour County council chambers fell silent for a moment in honour of the late Ken Oke, a former county warden and the former mayor of South Huron at the Aug. . 1 0 Y S committee -of -the -whole session. Oke, who died at the age of 63, is remembered as an amicable leader with a fine sense of humour. Rapid Response EMS Chief Dave Lew reports all is well with the county's newly introduced Rapid Response Units. Lew says since the service began on July 22, there have been 19 calls responded to with a less than two -minute response time on many of them. Lew also reports the department recently entered into contracts with Cen- tre Huron, the North Huron Fire Service and a private landowner to place crews at the Central Huron and Blyth fire halls and at a property at the intersection of 1 iighways 21 and 84. The Howick library is also being used as a post.
