After 18 years with the Children's Aid Society of Huron -Perth, Joan Van den Broeck slipped into
her retirement with a celebration July 28. Well-wishers huddled into the boardroom of the CAS
headquarters on MacEwan Street in Goderich on Thursday to send Van den Broeck off with love,
support and cake. Flanked by family, daughter Elizabeth and husband Ed, Van den Broeck said
her time with the agency and community was humbling, thanks to the endless support of staff
and volunteers. Claiming she was leaving "the best job in town," she offered a storied track
record for those in attendance.
"Before I came to work for the agency, I had 11 jobs," Joan told onlookers. 1 was a nurse. a
secretary, a researcher, a salesman ... all sorts of careers and I quit them all. To last this long at
this job, you gotta' know it meant a lot to me."
Joan began her time with the CAS by taclding the fundraising initiative to build the current
headquarters in Goderich. She credited her back-up support, Ed and Elizabeth and the
community as a whole tor their tireless work and assistance.
"It takes a whole community to raise a child, and to make things happen," Joan said. "tf people
believe strongly enough in what you want to do they will support it."
Her plans for retirement include spending more time with her grandchildren, "whether they like
it, or not," Joan joked.
