Emergency notification

In the case of disaster or emer-
gency, Huron County wants its
residents to be in the know as
soon as possible.
November 17, the county
launched its first community no-
tification system, the Protective
Response Interactive Systems
Management (PRISM 911), call-
ing it an important step forward
in community response.
"We'll be able to react quickly
to any emergencies by notify-
ing the general public about any
action they should take," said
county Warden Ken Oke.
The system is ready to call
residents within minutes of the
county becoming aware of an
emergency situation. Huron
County Emergency Medical
Services Chief David Lew said
those emergencies could be as
simple as boil water advisories,
to unexpected events as serious
as severe weather or missing
persons.
"It's a very important tool for
the community," Lew said. "On
the county level, it's an opportu-
nity for us to notify residents as
soon as possible. For citizens, I
think it offers protection for them
if something serious happens."
The county has been busy
implementing PRISM since its
purchase from the City of Quinte
West in March 2009. Approxi-
mately 8,000 telephone records
have been received and entered
to date- 30 per cent of all Huron
telephone numbers.
Still, Lew said every residen-
tial, commercial, industrial and
institutional telephone number is
needed. All residents are encour-
aged to go on-line and complete
the form if they have not already
done so. Forms may be found at
www.huroncounty.ca, and paper
forms are available in Goderich
at the county courthouse and also
all County Library locations.
Lew said if residents wish
to opt out of the program, that
choice is available.
"It's their prerogative to opt
out," he said. "The only issue
there is in case of an emergency,
they wouldn't get instant notifi-
cation."
PRISM 911 launched Novem-
ber 17, at Goderich Court House
Council Chambers.
