The local service club is expecting up to 500 patrons for the breakfast featuring Mansbridge at the Knights of Columbus Hall on Parsons Court beginning at 7 a.m. As well as being the morning's keynote speaker, the CBC news anchor will also be signing his latest book, Peter Mansbridge, One on One, an eclectic collection of re- vealing and personal interviews with some of Canada's and the world's movers and shakers from US President Barack Obama and the world's wealthiest man, Bill Gates, to Canadian legends Gordon Lightfoot and Sidney Crosby. One of the newest recipients of the coun- try's second highest civilian honour, the Order of Canada, Mansbridge has been a mainstay with the country's national broad- caster, the CBC, since he took a radio job in Churchill, Manitoba in 1969. Twenty years later, he became anchor of The National, the CBC's nightly national news broadcast. Born in London, England in the after- math of WWII, Mansbridge was educated in Canada and left high school for a two- year stint in the royal Canadian Navy in the late sixties. It was while he was working at the Churchill Airport in Manitoba that he was recruited to work for a local radio station by a radio executive who head his voice make a flight announcement. In 1971 he moved to Winnipeg as a re- porter for CBC Radio and in 1972 he joined CBC television and became the National's reporter in Saskatchewan. One year later he became a parliamentary correspondent in Ottawa. His work in Ottawa earned Mansbridge a number of substitute sessions as the anchor for Knowlton Nash and in 1998, as Mans - bridge was reportedly set to take a promi- nent position with US broadcaster CBS, Nash voluntarily gave up his position as anchor so Mansbridge could be promoted. In his twenty years as anchor of The National and during his 40 -year career, Mansbridge has provided comprehensive coverage of the most significant stories in Canada and around the world. He anchored coverage of many world events such as the Gulf War, the war in Ko- sovo and the tragic events around Septem- ber 11, 2001. He was on air live when the 2003 invasion of Iraq began and anchored the coverage. On the scene, he anchored coverage of the fall of the Berlin Wall, the funerals of Diana, Princess of Wales and Pope John Paul 11, a number of royal and presidential visits to Canada, numerous Olympic Games and the inauguration of President Obama.
