Young people will provide
the leadership of tomorrow
Young people, it seems, don't always get the recognition or credit they
deserve.
In fact, a cynical, older generation is often far too quick to denigrate the
actions of today's young people, and quick to judge their motives and
aspirations. Sometimes it's tough for young people to get proper support
and encouragement. Blame can be spread liberally when young people are
involved in acts of violence, crime or vandalism.
But to apply that same brush stroke to today's younger generation is
doing a disservice to the thousands of outstanding young people who give
tirelessly and unselfishly of themselves for the betterment of their schools,
neighbourhoods, friends and communities.
Far too often, the media is not diligent in reporting the unselfish acts of
these outstanding young citizens and the effect their good deeds have on
their corners of the world and beyond.
For over 25 years, this community newspaper, and newspapers across
the province, has been an ardent supporter of the Ontario Junior Citizen of
the Year Awards, a program that recognizes examples of leadership and the
indomitable spirit exhibited by our amazing young people.
Sometimes it's easy to pick out the leaders in a school or group of young
people while others, at a nearly age, are reticent to display their leadership
abilitiesand talents.
Unselfishly, many of the youth of this generation are already giving of
their time, talent and energy to make Ontario a great place to live. Young
people intuitively understand what the word `community' is really about
and unselfishly give of themselves by volunteering with different groups
and clubs, at school, at churches, with sports and so much more.
Coordinated by the Ontario Community Newspaper Association
(OCNA), the Ontario Junior Citizen Awards recognizes young people in
four areas; a person involved in worthwhile community service; a special
young person contributing to their community while living with a physical
or psychological limitation; an individual who has performed an act of
heroism in the past year or good kids who show demonstrated commit-
ment to make life better for others and do more than is normally expected
of someone their age.
These kinds of young people are everywhere in our communities and it
is time we acknowledge their dedication, and commitment to school, fam-
ily and community. Help us to pay tribute to these fine young leaders of
tomorrow, our future, by contacting the newspaper for a nomination.
The future is in good hands, and we need to support and encourage the
leaders of tomorrow.
Nomination forms are available at www.ocna.org or by calling OCNA
at 905-639-8720 ext. 243 or by contacting the Goderich Signal -Star.

Moving service thanks to support
To the Editor;
I have been involved
with Remembrance Day in
many ways since I was very
young.
During my 30 years or so
with the legion, there have
been many times that I have
been very moved. Never that
I can remember has there
been such a year as this one.
The Remembrance Church
Service at Knox Presbyte-
rian Church was great. The
parade was especially mov-
ing.
The outpouring of help for
our Poppy blitz, with the as-
sistance of the Goderich Jr.0
Sailors, and the Air Cadets,
was wonderful. We couldn't

have done it without all our
committee and poppy volun-
teers, who work so hard. The
Harbouraires concert at St.
George's Anglican Church
was fantastic. Thank you
all.
Our Remembrance Day
parade with the Celtic Blue
Highlanders, Laketown
Band, Air Cadets, the ele-
mentary school students and
the presence of the soldiers
from Meaford made this,
certainly one of the most, if
not the most, memorable one
of all.
For me, the most moving
moment was when the stu-
dents began to file, quietly
into the park. I think this
was the best tribute ever.
My heart is so full of grati-
tude to all those who gather
to pay this homage to our
Veterans both old and new.
Of course, we have to
thank Rev. Canon Allan Liv-
ingstone and his Boss for the
weather.
Thank you Goderich for
being such a caring commu-
nity.
