It can be hard to keep up with the local
H1N1 vaccine schedule, but this week,
Huron County Health Unit Chief Medi-
cal Officer Dr. Nancy Cameron says
things are looking good.
Five clinics have been scheduled
throughout the county, including one in
Goderich, that will allow an expanded -
priority group an opportunity for in-
oculation. The Ministry of Health and
Long Term Care expanded the vaccina-
tion priority list to include long-term
care residents 65 years -of -age and older,
emergency first responders such as po-
lice, fire and ambulance, and front-line
staff at correctional facilities. Pregnant
women will also continue to be vacci-
nated.
"We've been looking forward to being
able to vaccinate more people," Cam-
eron said. "We're hoping to be able to
open up to the general public by late No-
vember."
On Saturday, Nov. 21, a shot clinic will
be held at the Suncoast Mall in Goderich
from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
This clinic will cater to children aged
five months to 18 years, adults 65 years
and over, anyone over six -months -old
with a chronic medical condition that
weakens immune system, swine and
poultry workers, household contacts or
care providers of high-priority residents,
pregnant women and healthcare work-
ers, emergency responders and correc-
tional facility workers.
The health unit says two doses are
needed for children under three, and
children under the age of 10 who are im-
munocompromised. The doses are given
21 days apart.
After running out of their vaccine allot-
ment last week, the Huron County Health
Unit received an additional 2,000 shots
Stubborn spark keeps
firefighters on deck for hours

Members of the Goderich Fire De-
partment spent Remembrance Day bat-
tling a stubborn fire for more than seven
hours at Goderich Elevators at the South
Dock at Goderich Harbour.
Damage from the fire was limited to
a section of what is termed A House,
an extra storage unit independent of the
main elevator storage facility and not
often used.
Friction from a steel pulley on a main
belt caused the belt to overheat and burn
through, Goderich Fire Chief Steve Gar-
diner said.
"The belt burnt right through and we
had to cut holes in a steel structure to get
at the fire and there was a bin of prod-
uct that did catch fire," he said. " It was
difficult to access and the drive belt and
a bit of a nearby wood structure caught
fire. We had a crew on the roof pouring
water down and a crew on the bottom
cut through the steel to get at the fire."
Firefighters were on the scene from
9:30 am to 4:30 p.m.
Chief Gardiner said that while the
prospect of a fire call at the elevators
can be serious, "the facility is so clean
now and free of dust and debris that we
don't have to really worry about an ex-
plosion."
Members of the GFD returned to the
elevator area Sunday for a short practice
session.
The department was called out at 3
a.m. Monday, Nov. 16 to put out a `ire
that was set in a portable washroom out -

on Nov. 10. Those shots were distributed
to the expanded priority list patients as
directed by the provincial government
when the Health Unit visited long-term
care facilities and the Bluewater Youth
Centre Facility. A clinic was also held
for emergency first responders.
As of Monday, the Health Unit has re-
ceived and distributed more than 11,000
doses of the H1N1 vaccine. Some doc-
tor's offices still have vaccine available
for their patients who fit into the original
and expanded priority groups.
