"I stepped in the ring last night," said an
ecstatic Kirk Killam Sunday morning. The
Goderich boxer and instructor made his re-
turn to the ring September 26 in Sarnia.
It was his first fight in three years.
"At first it was really emotional," Killam
said. "I wasn't even expecting to fight."
However, a no-show by one of the other
fighters left a .blank space on the card, and
Killam jumped at the chance.
Fighting at 184 pounds, Killam was out of
his weight class, but it didn't stop him from
winning the decision.
"It was a good technical fight," he said. "He
got me with one good, straight right on the
nose but for being out of my class, it didn't
seem to hurt at all."
Up-and-comer Branden Bridges of Lakev-
iew Boxing scored the night's next victory in
his third fight in as many weeks.
It was a bit of a challenge, Bridges said, as
his opponent was considerably taller, howev-
er, he said he was able
to find his openings
and hammered away.
"I pretty much dom-
inated the fight," he
said. "When he threw
a punch, I would just
slip inside."
It was a slow-mo-
tion finish for Bridges,
he said. After landing
a kidney -shot on his
opponent, the other
boxer took a step to
the side before kissing
the mat and sealing
the fight.
He's come a long
way from his first
fight, where referees
had to call it off in the
third round.
"It was a horrible
fight," Bridges said
of his first time in
the ring. "By the end
of the fight I was drenched in blood so they
stopped it in the third."
However, every fight is a lesson learned,
and Bridges said the biggest surprise came
from left-handed Joe Keta of Kitchener.
"I found out five minutes before the fight
he was left-handed," he said. "I'm watching
that hand, and all of a sudden, I'm hit thinking
where the hell did that come from?"
Meanwhile, Alex Vodden is gaining more
experience in the ring, with a split decision
match in Brantford last Friday.
"I'm moviig my head a lot more now;" he
said of his improved technique. "And I' m hit-
ting a lot more. Basically just getting better."
Vodden was up against a fighter two years
his senior and still managed to pull out the
split decision, thanks to a lot of training, he
said.
"And he had a weak head, too," he added.
"That helped."
The entire Lakeview roster will be taking
their skills to Hamilton in mid-October, to
take part in the Summer Hays tournament.
