Township considering cemetery purchase Donny Soot! signal -star staff Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh Town- ship council is considering their options with a cemetery recently put on the real estate market. Coun. Connie Black briefed council on Greenhills Cemetery, located at Lot 12, Concession 13 in Lucknow. The lot was recently placed for sale in The Luc - know Sentinel, and she was worried that interests may purchase it who might not treat it. with the care and respect it de- serves. Treasurer/Administrator Mark Becker explained that council has no set prece- dence for purchasing cemeteries. Normally, cemeteries are run by an appointed board, however Greenhills is privately owned. Other cemeteries have been forfeit due to the controlling interests losing money, or walking away, and the town- ship has stepped in to care for the plots. However, they have never actually pur- chased one to date. Black brought the information about the cemetery to council's attention at the request of citizens in the township. "I had people asking me, 'When a cemetery is for sale, is there anything council can do?" she said. Coun. Barry Millian agreed with Black, saying that they have a duty to take care of cemeteries in their town- ship. "These are taxpayers' families and an- cestors, we should at least look at it," he said. Other councillors agreed, stating that, as a half -Catholic, half -Protestant cem- etery with no direct church relation, it is the closest thing to a completely public cemetery in the Lucknow area. "That makes this an easy purchase," Coun. Carl Sloetjes said. "We should definitely look into it." Reeve Ben Van Diepenbeek cautioned council that the purchase of a cemetery is not something they should consider lightly, because there could be unfors- een consequences. Particularly, Van Diepenbeek was concerned about mon- ey that has already been paid to the cur- rent owner for pre -purchased lots that are not occupied yet. If council was to take over the cern- etery, it could initially be a drain on tax payers he said. Funds that are used to maintain a cern- etery come from the sale of plots. If that money is in the hands of the previous owner, he said, maintenance and upkeep will come out of the public coffers. Council decided to look into the pur- chase and the terms, as well as where the funds that currently are held by the owner will go before entering into de- liberation. "We need to know a lot more of the de- tails before we can go any further with this discussion," Reeve Van Diepenbeek said. FALL IS A GREAT TIME TO LEARN TO FLY!
