GDCI held its Art and Artesians
night, and no, that isn't a spelling mis-
take.
"We had a lot of people thinking
the name had been spelled wrong,"
explained organizer Shelly Johnston.
"But an artesian is a hidden well, and
that is what the night was all about; The
whole basis was to show that there are
hidden arts in all subject areas."
Johnston noted several different ex-
hibits, explaining that art can be found
in science in dissection and in English
by putting visuals and music to an es-
say.
Displays included everything from
Taylor Steep's explanation of the evo-
lution of video game music to the un-
veiling of Victor Kloeze's award-win-
ning science project; a Green house in
Goderich..
Along with staples of an art show,
band performances, dramatic mono-
logues, and paintings adoming the
walls, there were also posters and ex-
hibits explaining .health and geology,
and videos made by GDCI's media
class.
Johnston explained that the free
show was so well received that it may
become an annual event, although the
name will be changed.
• She also explained that there will
always be material for this type of
show, because the pieces are not extra-
curricular projects.
"[The event] was curriculum -based,
the projects weren't done for the event,
they were done in, and for, class," she
said. "They are curriculum -required
assignments."
Even the event itself was a curric-
ulum -mandated requirement, as mu-
sic classes, including GDCI's Grade
11/12 music class, are required to or-
ganize an event.
Zehrs teams up with YMCA for kids' camp
The week of June 5 to 12, local Zehrs stores will
be raising funds for the YMCA. Cashiers will be
inviting shoppers to add $2 to their grocery bill to
help send a kid to YMCA summer camp. The store's
support comes at a time when many families are
facing economic challenges.
The one-week campaign is part of Loblaw Com-
panies Limited's national Give a Little, Help a Lot
Campaign.
"As part of our broader investment in enabling
children's participation in recreation, health and fit-
ness, Zehrs is pleased to support YMCA summer
camp," says Peggy Hornell, senior director of com-
munity investment.
"Each summer our YMCA provides kids from low
income families the opportunity to attend summer
camp. This is a great opportunity for these kids to
learn, grow and have fun. Donations to the YMCA
Strong Kids Campaign make this possible" explains
Jane Dawson, YMCA of Goderich-Huron.
"We are honoured that Zehrs has chosen to raise
funds for YMCA summer camp at a time when our
community needs it most. We encourage all of our
members, staff and friends to visit their local Zehrs
stores and make a gift during the week of June 5 to
12," announces CEO Jim Janzen.
