At a regular meeting Tuesday, May 26, trustees approved a series of intricately - worded motions designed to allow the board to fulfill its contractual obligations while eliminating an estimated 10 full- time teaching positions. Phrases in the motions included de- clared redundant, placed in the possibly redundant pool, and placed on the recall list. But, according to education director Chuck Reid, it all boils down to a declin- ing need for teachers due to over-all de- clining enrolment. "Normally, what has happened is that our retirements or our maternity leaves or our general leaves have balanced the reduced need for teachers due to declin- ing enrolment," Reid Photo submitted Dave Overboe director of social services for Huron County, Warden Ken Oke, MPP Carol Mitchell, Ron Heimrich board of directors'chair, administrator Martha Craig and Bluewater Mayor Bill Dowson were in Zurich May 29, where Mitchell announced $64,000 to the Bluewater Rest Home. Social housing gets government boost Social housing units in Huron will benefit from a $278,900 pro- vincial funding injection, Huron - Bruce MPP Carol Mitchell an- nounced Friday. The figure is part of a $640,900 investment for the riding that is aimed at helping repair and reha- bilitate social housing projects in Huron and Bruce counties that will enhance quality of life and provide opportunities for local families. "Huron County families have the right to live in homes that are safe, affordable and in good condition. This funding is •a significant step in addressing the need for housing repairs to our community's social housing stock." said Mitchell. The province is investing $640,900 in the riding with Bruce County receiving $362,000 and Huron County receiving $278,900 to go towards energy-efficient ap- pliances and repairs to drainage, windows and solar panel design. This funding will go towards 156 existing social housing units in • five projects in Bruce County and 440 existing social housing units in 19 projects in Huron County. The funding is part of a $100 million investment the province provided to 47 Municipal Service Manag- ers across Ontario to repair social housing units. Investing in social hous- Great Cars. "But this year, we've reached a stage where a num- ber of our teachers aren't ready for re- tirement . . . We've reached that cross- roads." Currently, the board employs 485 secondary school teachers and 589 elementary teachers. Within the past decade, there have been limited declarations of redundancy at the conclusion of some Avon Maitland school years,_ but the tendency has been to rehire those teachers the following September – once funding, staffing and enrolments are finalized. And Reid said, "our hope is that we'll be able to call all (the released teach- ers) back over time." But this year, that's very unlikely to hap- pen within just afew months. "I think we're going to be looking at this for at least the next couple of years," the education director stressed. "If we're go- ing to be realistic, I don't think (this year) is an anomaly." 0 cc a 2 0 • 0 m CC w N 0 0 J J m BASEMENT EXCAVATION • EROSION CONTROL • SCREENED TOPSOIL to v 0 m r cn C) LICENSED SEPTIC INSTALLER S SERVICING • MINI EXCAVAT z 0 cn GAVIN'S 6 CLEANING & DISASTER RESTORATION DOUG GAVIN IS PASSING THE TORCH AFTER 26 YEARS And so Doug would like to thank all of his customers for . their business and support «!A .,JN' over the past 26 years. • As of May 1st GAVIN's', Cleaning & Restoration will• j be under new Ownership & Management and DOUG wants to wish DARRYL McMILLEN, the new owner, the very best of success.
