Suspicious blaze causes million
in damages in Central Huron
repairs."
King said one train per week
travels the line, transporting
goods such fertilizer, beans,
soy meal and wheat for five cus-
tomers.
The rail line, which also runs
between Goderich and Stratford
to just north of London where it
connects with the main CN line,
was purchased from CN Rail in
1992.
Van Mierlo, who visited the site
Tuesday afternoon, said the line
is likely to be closed for a lengthy
period of time.
"Just the logistics of getting
equipment and people in there,
dismantling the old line and
building a new trestle is huge,"
Van Mierlo said.

Rail traffic between Clinton
and Centralia has been halted in-
definitely after a "suspicious" fire
destroyed a trestle between the
two communities, causing an es-
timated $1 -million damage.
Huron OPP said Central Hu-
ron firefighters were called to
the blaze three kilometres south
of Clinton and a kilometre west
of London Road about 9 p.m.
Monday, May 25, although it's
believed the fire started between
2 p.m. and 7 p.m.
Half of the wood -and -steel
structure, owned by the Goderich
Exeter Railway, was destroyed.
"This was a big fire," said
Const. Joanna Van Mierlo. "The
heat was so intense the railway
tracks expanded into S -curves."
No one was injured. An inves-
tigator from the Ontario fire mar-
shal's office was on the scene the
following day.
The trestle spans a deep gul-
ly over the Bayfield River.The
short -haul railway is a subsidiary
of RailAmerica, based in Florida.
A company spokesperson said the
line is suspended.
"There are no alternative rail
lines available for our custom-
ers," said spokesperson Michelle
King.
"Traffic along the branch line
is suspended until further notice.
(We are) working to determine
the extent of the damage and will
notify customers as soon as pos-
sible regarding the timeline for

Friday marked the deadline .for
the town to apply for Recreation-
al Infrastructure Canada (RINC)
funding for improvements to Li-
ons Harbour Park.
. On the list for Lions Harbour
Park are the construction of new
accessible washrooms as well as
improvements to the bandshell
building.
The recently -announced RINC
program required the town to
modify its submissions for other
split -funding grants. RINC is
solely intended for rehabilitation
or reconstruction of recreational
infrastructure.
The funding application also
includes a request for money to
upgrade, replace and. make ac-
cessible children's playground

The latter will be not only for
Lions Harbour Park, but at parks
and parkettes throughout town.
At their May 28 meeting, the
Goderich Lions Club confirmed
their level of support for the ap-
plication, as well as a preliminary
feasibility study on the project.
True to government form, ap-
plication approvals or denials
should be received within 4-6
weeks.

This was well beyond council's
budgeted amount of $25,000. The
item will be referred to the airport
for further cost analysis.
In the May 27 edition of the Goderich

Comumetre`s Annual General Meeting
was to be hold at noon. We regret for
any confusion this caused.
The story, Livesey closes the book

vesey was put on patrol with George .
Lonsbary. The Signal -Star regrets the
error.
