McGee
to remain
strong part
of GM plan

It's business as usual for GM
Canada and it's business as usual at
McGee Motors in Goderich after it
was announced Monday that Gen-
eral Motors in the United States
tiled for Chapter I1 bankruptcy
protect ion.
The Obanra administration's
plan to shrink the automaker to a
sustainable size and give a majority
ownership stake to the federal gov-
ernment was put in motion Mon-
day with the bankruptcy filing, the
fourth largest in U.S. history and
the largest for un industrial com-
pany.
But GM Canada, with a new
government approved plan to in-
ject $9.5 billion into the automak-
er, will not require court supervi-
sion for restructuring and in return,
Canada will retain 16 per cent of
GM's North American vehicle pro-
duction until 2016.
Recently GM Canada rational-
ized its network of dealers across
the country, canceling franchise
agreements with many rural and
urban dealerships, creating anx-
ious moments for local dealers like
McGees until definitive word was
offered.
"The decision on dealership fran-
chise agreements was due at 2 p.m.
and we had no word until 6 p.m.
that day. It was an anxious time for
the dealership and employees and

Minister
says no
need for full
assessment

The Town of Goderich will not he
requiring a full environmental as-
sessment in its bid to develop Par-
sons Court east of Maitland Woods.
The town has the official OK from
Environment Minister John Gerre-
tsen. The decision was made after
giving careful consideration to the
issues raised in Goderich's outstand-
ing request, project documentation,
and municipal -class EA.
In order to protect the natural en-
vironment and keep the public in-
lormed, the MOE is requiring the
town to send a copy of its stormwa-
ter management plan to requesters.
The plans are to include `alternative
mechanisms or procedures for col-
lecting and treating the stormwater"
as well as a summary and proper
identification of those alternatives.
However if the methods employed
by the town stray from the approved
plan or deviate from the terms set
out in the EA, they could be subject
to prosecution.
The minister's office received 12
replies from concerned citizens with
regards to the February screening
report, and recently responded to
the writers, including John Hazlitt
of Goderich.
In a letter to council dated May
21, Hazlitt claimed the town falsi-
fied the amount of available indus-
trial land in their letter to the minis -
