Research funds to help define the many roles of shelters

The Huron Women's Shelter has been a
source of strength and of sanctuary for wom-
en in crisis for years.
Put simply, they provide what needs to be
provided for women in difficult times.
But exactly what do they do?
What happens after women leave the pro-
tection of the organization?
How does the help received there differ
from other available social agencies, espe-
cially in a rural setting?
These are the questions executive director
Michele Hansen has asked herself for past
five years, and as of last Friday; the answers
are getting to within reach. •
Huron -Bruce MPP Carol Mitchell was at
the Goderich Library April 24, announcing
a grant for $248,200
from the Ontario Tril-
lium Foundation,
which will be used to
review the services of-
fered by the province's
96 women's shelters.
Headed by Han-
sen and researchers
from the University of
Western Ontario, the
comprehensive review
of shelter services
will take place in two
P,
"Phase one of the
research will be with-
in the shelters," said
Hansen. "To map out
the services currently
provided."
Consultations will
begin taking place
across the province
• with shelters, clients
and other social ser-
vices to get a definitive
look at the roles they
play in their commu-
nities.

Huron -Bruce MPP Carol Mitchell (right) presents Huron Women's Shelter execu-
tive director Michelle Hansen a certificate to mark the approval of a $248,200
Trillium grant to research the vital role of the province's 96 shelters.
She said while the shelter is able to help
victims of violence against women, it cannot
stop it from happening.
Roma Hams, a UWO professor on the re-
search team team, called it a huge task, bit a
vital one.
"You can't do community-based research
without getting in touch with the commu-
nity," she said.
Shelters act as gateways to so many other
services their role has been undefinable for a
long time.
With the grant announcement and subse-
quent research, that will change.
"Although the shelter is valuable," said
Hansen. "We've never been able to say,
`here's the proof of that.'
"We're launching a dream today."
The doctors working on the project are
Nadine Wathen, Marilyn Ford-Gilboe and
Harris. Barb Harris, community director for
the Centre for Research on Violence Against
Women and Children will round out the re-
search lineup.
Mitchell said she's pleased funding was fi-
nally allocated to the project This is the sec-
ond Trillium application made by the Wom-
en's Shelter, and the first successful one.
Children's Festival planning
committee full steam ahead
Will Goderich be without it's annual Chil-
dren's Festival in 2009?
"No way!" said event coordinator Lori
Patterson. Following a
rocky start this year, the
festival planning com-
mittee has taken on five
new members follow-
ing their second meet-
ing in April.
That means one
thing, according to Pat-
terson, it's "full steam
ahead" to the popular
children's activity.
Set to take place on
Saturday, June 27, the
Children's Festival is
