Goderich Chamber of Commerce
means business in troubling times
If you ever need an ex-
ample of an organization
that is committed to its
community, the Goderich
and District Chamber of
Commerce is one such or-
ganization which has our
town's economic best inter-
est at heart.
The Chamber got its start
in 1991 when a handful of
local business owners got
together to discuss issues
that affected their businesses and
their role in developing the fu-
ture vision of economic growth
in Goderich and the surrounding
areas.
Whether from stagnation, burn-
out or lack of interest the volun-
teer group floundered. The Cham-
ber's 2004 reorganization was
not just necessary, it provided a
chance for those original believ-
ers to speak face-to-face with the
town's business owners and man-
agers to determine if there was
a need to keep the organization
alive and how to do it success-
fully.
"It was unanimous that the
businesses of our town needed a
Chamber of Commerce to insure
that their voices were heard," said
Judy Crawford, CEO of thu orga-
nization.
Since its rebirth the voluntary
organization has grown to include
250 members that include busi-
ness owners, managers, and for
the first time non-profit organiza-
tions. •
"This kind of support is truly
encouraging," added Crawford.
"It means that the commitment to
broaden our scope and promote
our community is a priority and
allows us to speak with a united
voice."
This was demon-
strated when Volvo an-
nounced its closure, as
the Chamber of Com-
merce was the first or-
ganization off the mark
in responding to the
news, and in offering
a message of support
and hope to those who
will be affected by the
closure. In 'their ability
to pull groups together
the Chamber acted quickly by
bringing local leaders from gov-_
ernments, business, tourism, so-
cial services, training groups and
agricultural representatives to the
Growth for Our Future table.
"It was important that the
Chamber provide a forum for all
of us to begin to map out how we
recdver from the loss of Volvo,
and the steps we need to take to
move forward as a community,"
Crawford said.
It was the first of many steps
our Chamber of Commerce has
taken in demonstrating its role to
coordinate and provide a forum
for a healthy networking of ideas
among our business community.
The Chamber of Commerce has
also recently distributed a survey
to all businesses and organiza-
tions in and around Goderich. It
is hoped that the results from the
surveys, which we due back to
the Chamber this week, will give
them an idea of where we are,
what we have available as a com-
munity, what the needs of busi-
nesses are and what they project
their future to be.
"There needs to be an ongoing
process of understanding as to
who is doing what, and identify-
ing roles so we as a community
avoid conflict and duplication of

efforts if we're going to provide
good value to the members and
partners of our Chamber," con-
cluded Crawford.
On Friday January 30th at the
Royal Canadian Legion, the God-
erich and District Chamber of
Commerce presented its Spirit
of Success Awards Gala, offer-
ing the Chamber a chance to
showcase the best and brightest
among its members. This year the
Chamber received forty-one nom-
inations. Ten awards were given
for excellence in categories that
include: technology/manufactur-
ing, community spirit, business of
the year, new business award and
young entrepreneur.
As the Chamber of Commerce
volunteers work pro -actively to
uphold its core value to reflect a
strong responsible business cli-
mate and provide leadership and
advocacy for the purpose of in-
fluencing public policy and gov-
ernment, there is always room for
more.
The Goderich Chamber active-
ly recruits those from inside and
outside its membership who wish
to get involved with initiatives
like training programs, market-
ing, events, committees and more.

tant work the Chamber of Com-
merce does weare invited to

know that supporting businesses
is crucial in ensuring a bright fu-
ture for those who make Goderich
their home or their destination.
After all, ensuring a prosperous
future for our community should
be everyone's business.
