Week to shed light on disordered eating habits
Organizations across the country are
hoping to make the general public more
knowledgeable about disordered eating and
associated behaviours during Eating Disor-
der Awareness Week (Feb. 1-7).
Local Community Psychiatric Services
social worker Anita Kreutzwiser says that
anyone can be at risk for developing an eat-
ing disorder.
"Eating disorders are very complex prob-
lems and can affect both women and men,"
she explains. "If a person has extreme con-
cerns about weight and shape and is prac-
ticing extreme weight control behaviours
then they likely have some form of an eat-
ing disorder. The most common types of
eating disorders are Anorexia Nervosa, Bu-
limia Nervosa and Binge Eating Disorder."
Studies show that although an eating dis-
order can begin at any age, the most com-
mon age is between 14 and 25 and eating
disorders are the most common chronic
illness in the female adolescent popula-
tion. The annual death rate associated with
anorexia is more than 12 times higher than
the annual death rate due to all other causes
combined for females between. 15 and 24
years old.
Kreutzwiser says that eating disorders
can have a serious, negative impact not
only on health, but also on family and so-
cial relationships. However, there are signs
that family and friends can keep an eye out
to determine if a loved one's health could
be in danger. "Some warning signs of an
eating disorder may include significant
weight loss, menstrual periods become ir-
regular or stop, poor or distorted body im-
age, increased dental problems, hair loss,
sensitivity to cold, calorie counting, pre-
occupation with food, diets and weight,
excessive exercising, frequently checking
weight, fatigue, dizziness or fainting, rapid
and out of control eating."
While there is no single reason for a per-
son to develop an eating disorder, Kneutz-
wiser says pressures from society and the
media, family factors, transitions in adoles-
cence, and traumatic events are some fac-
tors that may contribute.
Although she cautions that. there is no
way to protect a child from developing
some form of disordered eating, Kreutz-
wiser says parents modeling. healthy be-
haviour can go a long way towards ensur-
ing that their children will do the same.
Supporting a friend or family member with
an eating disorder, can be challenging, says
Kreutzwiser. "Approaching a friend you
suspect has an eating disorder is not an
easy thing to do. The individual may deny
they have a problem and react with anger,"
she cautions. Kreutzwiser also points out
that there is no easy or immediate remedy
to deal with an eating disorder. If you are
a parent concerned that your child has an
eating disorder then discuss this with your
family physician. If you are looking for
help in recovering from an eating disorder
or you are concerned your child may have
an eating disorder contact 519-482-3945 or
1-877-695-2524 ext 6104 for more infor-
mation.
