The Children's Theatre Company will be performing The Little Mermaid and Harry
Potter and the Obnoxious Voice Feb. 7 and 8 at the McKay Centre.

"Hundreds of kids have gone ,though my
group,"•said Jennifer Black, director of the
Children's Theatre Company.
For the past 25 years, Black has been intro-
ducing Goderich's young thespians to all as-
pects of the theatre.
"Stage, makeup, being backstage, lighting,"
she said. "We learn all different things."
From the early days as the Children's Little
Theatre to the present day, the company has
been putting on winter and spring performanc-
es as a culmination of the kids' hard work.
From "shaking in their boots," to coming
into their element on the stage on opening
night, Black said she is always amazed at the
talent and excitement of the children.
The Children's Theatre Company will be
putting on a double bill for two performances
for this year's, Winterfest.
"Both plays, both days," said Black.
First up is The Little Mermaid, a Hans Chris-
tian Anderson favourite adapted by Kathryn
Schultz -Miller. •
Following that is the spoof, Harry Potter and
the Obnoxious Voice by Jeannette Jaquish.
The performances will take place February
7 and 8 beginning at 2 p.m.
The cost is $5 per person, with children un-
der 12 free.
While most productions Black puts on have
casts of around 15 children, this year she has
her hands full with a 27 -member ensemble in
one play and 11 in the other.
Most important, she said, is that every child
has a line after the curtain rises. If that means a
few creative changes, so be it.
"I write in a part for them so they have
something to do or say," she said.
Of course, memorizing their lines is just
one small step in embracing the theatre, Black
said.
The transformation is incredible in the chil-
dren from day one, when stomach butterflies
reign supreme to show time, when the kids
take the stage as young actors.
"When they start to see the audience come
in, they realize this is for real," she said.
The job of shaping young talent is a reward-
ing one, and Black said it's always a pleasure
to see former students come back and say
hello.
"I love it," she said. "I have kids come up
and give me a hug and tell me they got into
theatre."
And to think it all started with 15 weeks at
the McKay Centre the company's venue.
"We love it there," said Black.
Children from across Huron County come
to the Children's Theatre Company. Black has
students from Zurich, Clinton, Colborne and
even Kincardine in her group.
Funds raised from the Winterfest perfor-
mances will go to the McKay Centre.
Loving winter takes work: part two
Continuing from last week, we find
Katrina and her (obviously insane)
husband Wayne (who apparently
LOVES winter) sitting down with
a cup of coffee, the snow. is falling
outside and -we all want to know how
Wayne can honestly say that he loves
winter.
"Well, first of all, I like the cold.
Summer is torture trying to work in
all of that heat. In the winter, I can just put
on more clothing if it's cold. In the summer,
there's nothing to do but sweat and suffer. (My
husband is a red-headed dairy farmer. Physi-
cal labour in the sumtrher heat is truly a drag
for him. I'll give him that.)
"And the air is always so crisp And cool.
There isn't any air polution or smog. It's al-
ways clean and fresh. (Hmm, OK). ,
"And I'm a fanner. In the winter, I have a
chance for down time — no fields to plough,
crops to plant, hay to bring in, corn to harvest.
I can actually sit down in an afternoon
and relax reading the paper!"
1 had to say that he had soine valid
points. Walking out into a crisp, win-
ter day really is a nice feeling. Hot
chocolate after skiing or tobogganing
is something to look forward to. Mak-
ing snmwmen and forts with the kids
IS fun. Plus, I'm not much into lawn -
mowing or gardening, so a nice blan-
ket of snow on the property certainly covers a
multitude of sins.
Maybe he wasn't completely insane. May-
be I could buy into this "liking winter'' con-
cept. You.know that cliche, "Every cloud has a
silver lining"? Well, maybe we could find that
silver lining and like the cloud too! (Which is
good for our peace of mind when that cloud
stays with us from November to March.)
Maybe I could wake up in the morning,
