Sailors come up short on weekend Gerard Crease • signal -star staff The Goderich Jr. 'C' Sailors took a thumping at home Saturday night, as the top-ranked Kincardine Bulldogs came to town to score goals and stir up trouble in their 11-4 victory. The Bulldogs took a total of eight penalties in the third period alone, with Blake Underwood and Tim Dwinnell both scoring short-handed on Corey Gascho. The Sailors were light on penalties for the game, splitting seven for the first two periods and just two in the third. Jamie Miller scored short-hand- ed in the first assisted by Scott Miller. Greg Tifiin added a solo contibution late in the second. Matt McClinchey exploded in the third, scoring twice - once off the power play. Shawn Moore picked up two as- sists, with Brett Phillips and Brent Al- ton each racking up one. Though they were plagued by pen- alties in the third, Kincardine did the bulk of their scoring in the tail end of the game, putting in five of six third period goals in the last ten minutes. The Bulldogs seemed to have the Sailors' penalty -killing line figured out, scoring on both opportunities against a short-handed Goderich line. And those lines may change in the coming days. This week, the Western Junior 'C' League teams will undergo some transformation as players are added and dropped for the Jan. 10 deadline. While there is no word on what changes will take place on Goderich's bench, Sailors' general manager Ken Crawford said there will be move- ment all across the league. Goderich's next home game is this Saturday, Jan. 10 against Mount For- est. Atom Lakers start year with two wins xaM=nm The Huron Perth 'AAA' Minor Atom Lakers started the New Year off on a winning note, taking a couple big wins off Waterloo 3-2 and Brantford 6-2. The last time we played these two teams Waterloo won 7-1 and Brant- ford won 5-1 with a total of 12 goals against the Lakers and two for. The Minor Atoms took a 180 de- gree turn and beat both teams with a goal total of nine and four against. "This is what hard work and im- provement is all about," explained coach Shawn Hertel. In the win against Waterloo, goal - tender Brock Baier of Wallace saved the Lakers in the beginning of the first period until the team got their legs. Noah Kuno of Stratford scored the first goal assisted by Tanner Hertel of Sebringville. Eric Charlebois of Sau- geen Shores scored the second goal assisted by Tanner Hertel and Noah Kut'lo. Mitchell Newson of Wingham scored the winner assisted by Justin Beuermann of Seaforth. Ln IWRS A l Excellent back checking by Will Thibeault of Stratford and Scott Ch- isholm of Seaforth provided good team defense. On Sunday the Minor Atoms trav- eled to Brantford. Baily Paquette of Stratford played a solid game in net with 23 shots. Noah Kuno scored the first goal assisted by Hertel, Thibeault scored the 2nd goal assisted by Jacob Rooke of Embro. Hertel scored assist- ed by Kuno. "Q -Ball" Quinton Mad- dock of Owen Sound took a nice wrist shot outside the blue line and put it in the left top shelf on a rush out cf his own end unassisted. Justin Beuermann scored assisted by Newson and Scott Chisholm on a good effort from their line. Kuno scored his second assisted by Hertel and Ben Derrough of Goderich. Charlebois did not make the score sheet but did the small things that contributed to his line for a success- ful weekend which really shows how great players aren't always on the score sheet. Cody Treble of . Blyth played a good grinder roll on the ice which helps the team winning those battles. The Lakers' six defencemen (Brad- ley Kraemer of Stratford, Brennan Stapleton of St. Marys, Evan Moore- head of Stratford, Chad Treble of Blyth, Derrough, and Maddock) handled the pressure better with great communication made some nice end- to-end rushes with the puck. You can catch the Minor Atom Lak- ers this weekend on Sunday, January 11 at the Maitland Recreation Centre in Goderich as they take on Cam- bridge. The puck drops at 5:00 p.m. From January 16-18 the team trav- els to Cambridge for the Preston Inter- national Tournament.
