Sights of Goderich
A quick juant about town on Monday, Jan.
5 gave way to a number of wintry sights
under a bright sun. Clockwise, the CSL
Tadoussac holds up at the harbour. The
pier beneath a sunny sky. Trucks busy to
and from the salt mine. Goderich's North
entrance is quickly becoming a point of
controversy.

The Ontario Provincial Police will
enforce the new law. The law has
been the centre of a hefty public
awareness campaign for the past
six months.

It's time to butt -out — if only while
baby's on board.
On Jan. 21, smokers will , be
forced to butt -out while riding in
cars with passengers 16 -years -old
and younger, or face a hefty fine.
A new law will see a $250 fine
levied against any person smoking
in a car with someone under the age
of 16 present. According to a press
release issued in late 2008 by the
Ministry of Health Promotion,"The
person holding lighted tobacco
would be subject to a fine."
"It will be similar to policing the
use of seat belts," said Huron OPP
officer Const. Joanna Van Mierlo.
"If we see someone using tobacco
in a car with a child, we'll let them
know about it."
On June 16, 2008, all three parties
in the provincial legislature voted
to pass the bill making it illegal to
smoke in a car with children.
The Huron Health Unit and the
County. of Huron had toiled oyer
a similar bylaw for the county in
2008, but the motion was lost in
the shuffle following enforcement
questions.
The law, an amendment to the
Smoke Free Ontario Act, applies

1 The Ontario government has passed legislation that bans smok-
ing in motor vehicles while a person under 16 years old is present.
1 Second-hand smoke in motor vehicles can be up to 27
times more concentrated than in a smoker's home.
1 Children who breathe second-hand smoke are more likely
to suffer health problems such as sudden infant death syn-
drome, asthma, and cancer and cardiac disease later in life.
1 Second-hand smoke can also influence a child's ability to
reason and understand, and can negatively impact behav-
iour and attention span.
