Box 220, 120 Huckins Street, Goderich, Ontario N7A 4B6 EDITORIAL A change in attitude can lead to positive results Welcome to a brand new year. And, indeed, we need a new year, the old one simply didn't work. Never ehas there been such celebration to usher in a shiny, new calendar of 365 days. Thankfully, we can put 2008 to rest. And the start of a new year is always full of promise, excitement and'ihe hope that conditions will be more favourable, It brings with it the hope that our lives will somehow improve and that leaders will step forward to guide us out • of the dysfunctional global financial and political mess we've endured. If anything, 2008 was the year of absolute greed. It was a year of political opportunism and game -playing partisanship. Now the world must rebuild. At the start of a new year, it is common for people to resolve to do better. People look for improvements to enhance their physical and spiritual lives and vow to improve their personal and profes- sional situations. It's a time when we can collectively re-evaluate our priorities and start all over, even if the resolutions or improvements go no further than the recesses of our minds. However, it is important that people collectively resolve to improve the conditions they live in. We need to improve our world, our conditions and especially our outlook. Personally, our own world becomes what we think about. People can make and break all the embarrassingly personal 'resolutions they want but the most important resolution anyone can make is to exude a new and different attitude. A positive attitude. Never before in our world and in Goderich has' there been an apparent and demonstrated need for a different attitude. We need to be positive, constructive, conciliatory, inclusive, tolerant, indulgent and respectful. We need to listen and we need to work together. People need to focus their minds on things that really matter and disregard history or past failures. People have to look for solutions that work and be open to compromise and new and bold ideas and thought process- es. The challenges facing the world, the country, the province and the town are unprecedented. We not only live in interesting times, we live in a time that is challenging our collective resources and our ability to react and adapt. These challenges, at every level and especially at the municipal level, require a new determination and bold response, not acrimoni- ous finger -pointing and accusations of "what could have been" or "what should have been". We must now focus on "what can and will be." For we have a brand new year and the future is ours. We have •the ability to approach it with a positive attitude and make great things happen. So why waste the opportunity. All the best in the New Year.
