When the war began, few aero- planes were equipped with wireless apparatus, but when the value of maintaining communication between an aeroplane; observer and a battery of guns became evident, the number of aircraft with apparatus rapidly in- creased. Many 'experiments, says Mr. Claude Grahame -White in Heroes of the Flying Corps, were, :however, necessary before a practical system of wireless could be devised for an aeroplane. The wireless plant of an aeroplane must be extremely light and must oc- cupy a very small space. One of the first successful .plants weighed about one hundred, pounds and was capable of sending and receiving messages over a distance of one hundred miles, The dynamo that generates current for the wireless apparatus is usually driven by a small petrol motor that is independent of the main driving en- gine, and develops about two'.and.three quarters horse power; the antenna, or aerial wire, may be unwound from a reel fixed below the chassis of the aeroplane and allowed to trail earth- wardduring the time the machine is in flight. In the bombardment of the Turkish forts during the naval operations - in the Dardanelles, the Queen Elizabeth, standing off eleven miles from the shore, was able, thanks to seaplane co-operation, to place with accuracy the huge shells from her fifteen -inch guns, although the targets at which she aimed—Turkish forts that fringed the shore—were invisible to theun- ners. g The Germans also proved the value of aeroplane fire control when they moved a big siege gun toward Dun- kirk and threw shells into that sea- port from a distance of twenty miles, It would have been impossible for them to fire with any degree of accu- racy had it not been for the aeroplanes i Dunkirk, hovered high above ye Du z ikirk , watching the shells burst and sending inn the gunners, n ofthea to "eCt10 S C011g r who were sudden miles away. But here we have a condition where the membrane is able and ready to do its work, but it is prevented by foreign mat - i down from the which has dro ed pp head and coated it. How then, can the usual treatment for indigestion be of use? Since catarrh is the cause of the trouble, it is the catarrh that must be treated. CAUSE OF DEAFNESS A. cause which is responsible :Cor a great many cases of deafness is catarrh, The whole trouble generally begins in a simple cold in the head, Duringsuoh a cold almost every person eape iencee that feeling of stuffiness which tells of inflammation extending into the poet nasal space where th openings of the Eustachian TubeS are the and which is accompanied by catarrhal secretions, collected in the Post -nasal space where it is difficult to blow it out of the nose or hawk it up. When such conditions nave become chronic, tis in catarrh, the clanger is grave. The mucus,, carrying the a'erme,' drops into the throat The kine -like nauseating mass ,stic'a for p. time to quick to take advantage of the oppor- tunity. They invade the Eustachian Tubes. Their presence and irritation it ' causes produce snore and more mucus, Gradually this fills up the . ear tube so thatsounds can only pass through with difficulty. The patient finds his hearing slowly going. When the tubes are com- pletely filled total deafness may result. In deafness from nasal catarrh, which affects the middie ear, it often happens that crackling sounds are present which distress and confuse the patient. These are due to the fact that the mucus which fills the upper part and back of: the throat is covering the opening of , the Eustachian Tubes and the bursting :of' bubbles or the movement .of mucus causes the sounds, which come from the altered resonance of the ear. After a crackling report the Bead may seem&+ clearer and the hearing better for a time. Later on in the case there may be crackling; sounds when swallowing, which come from the efforts of a stif- fened muscle to open the tubes which yield with a jerk. The above x lavation of a most com- mon anon cause of deafness should: make it' clear how 'absurd and useless it is to at tempt to overcome such tleafnes5 by ear•, drums or devices of a similar sort.
