Exeter Advocate, 1900-11-8, Page 4OB2t.eter tivottlav, Chas. E. Sanders, Ed1tor and Prop THURSDAY, .NOV. Sth„ 1900 NORTH MIDDLESEX. While we haye to face political de- feat throughout the Dominion we have one consoling feature, namely, that our efforts were not without effect in North Middlesex-, notwith- standing the barefaced and wholesale corruption pttiedthroughout the riding during the campaign. , The."mahine" which has beee so ex - extensively operated throughout On- tario, as everybody, knows played its part with a vengeance, moving up and down the coneessions and side -lines regardless of priucipal or law and per- forined open and shameless bribery oh all sides in the interest of Mr. Raz. Considering these facts the victory to Mr. Sherritt is one that that gentle- man has every reason, to feel proud of. • Before these words are read the elec- tion of 1900 will be past and the result, unless the contest is a very close one, known. Never, perhaps, has an issue been more doubtful, or parties more thoroughly broken, up. The Govern- ment has had two broadsides poured iu at clese range from unexpected quarters and one time -friends. John Charlton and H. I -I. Cook have more than astonished friend and foe. That the old Globe is not what it once sees's' is plainly shown when the tis-erise is not read out of the party e;ihe latter has been. To ,cokSiiit the election of Charlton in ,NO-iith Norfolk a Liberal gairlinivads like an election joke. The tue liberal feeling is better shown by such new recruits as Don of the Satur- day Night, who denotes a paragraph to ridiculing the mora I Reformers from the shores of Lake Erie through his well-known Sabbath and social purity fads. But these are healthy signs. If Laurier escapes he may thank the South African contingent for it. The •Ontario Government also has cmaae to the rescue with its 160 acres for each returning soldier. But Tarte and Sif- ton are heavy weights and if the Liber- al Ship comes into port these worthies .had better make no more trips as able bodied seamen. But then Sir Wilfrid knows that party will and would no dolibt have sent both adrift had he not been deterred for fear of what they might do outside the ship. When this is read all will be known and the day is too close to inch -lige in prophesying. Ratz Defeated. Parkhill, Ont. New York, Nov. 6. -(Midnight.) -It became evident at a very early hour this evening, that the election of Mc- Kinley and Roosevelt was assured. At 8.30 o'clock returns from nearly- two- thirds of the election districts of Grea- ter New York had been received; indi- - eating beyond q uestion that Bryan and Stevenson could not expect more than 25,000 or 30,000 plurality in this Demo- cratic stronghold, and unless there was a landslide in the outside counties beyond all reasonable expectations the • pivotal State of New York has declared. in unmistakable terms, although by a greatly reduced majority, for the Re- publican candidates. As the night progressed, it only served to confirm this judgment. Pim stnessiNG The whole story was easily and brief- ly told. The Republican ticket would have a larger electoral vote than four years ago. but in the larger states of the east and middle west, the plurali- • ties had been greatly reduced. Massa- chusetts had fallen from 174,000 to 50,- 000; New York from 268,000 to 150,000 and Illinois from 142,000 to 100,000 or less. "Deride Not Any v A, tio Man's initrintties.
