The People's Candidate To the Electors of Goderich MEANSLadies and Gentlemen,— I.exceedingly.regret. that enforced absence from Town for the first half of this week prevented my attending the citizen's meeting 1. Honesty. on Monday evening and responding to my nomination as Mayor. I appreciate very deeply the sentiments expressed by many II. Economy with Efficiency ratepayers who have urged me to stand for the office, and although I have declined repeatedly, I finally submitted under the persuasion III. Sound Financing that, if we are to take advantage' df industrial extensions which are DOW being grasped by all the Towns and Cities of Ontario, we must IV. Manufacturing Interests Encouraged' have lin aggressive municipal council to help secure them. Permit me in passing, to assure you that I am not running as V. Equal Rights for All and Favors for None. the candidate of a discouraged Steel Company ; I am entirely on my own responsibility as a lifelong citizen, paying taxes personally on VI. That your business will be done in a conscien- TC'wn property which isabsolutely my own, and representing as Manager an industry which brings to the Town a very large traffic tions and business -like mauler. and pays annually over $4.0Q0 into your tax revenue. My interest with the Lake Huron Steel Corporation was entirely as President of the $oard of,Trade, in following a defined policy to encourage mdus- tries to locate in our community, Notwithstanding any impressions to the contrary I can assure you that no by-law would have been submitted to the ratepayers with Ivry sanction, unless our community interests were absolutely protected. by an "air -tight” by-law prepared umurnrcnmmuninuruennaruuuauuurmuummnaramuulmmnar by our Town solicitor, nMr.sc Charles Trwhom recognize as most competent earl conscientious. True, i invested in some real s estate within the present Town limits, which wall to be incorporated in the housing section of the proposed steel manufacturing area, a t perfectly legal transaction for anyone, even a member of the Town ES Council, but my reason for tbis was largely to safeguard against possible unwarranted inflation of property values if the adjoining Tdwnship properties were disposed of to outside speculators who =r ELECT would have no permanent interest. It has been stated that one or two merchants did, not relish the =.r idea of large concerns locating in or near Goderich, as this would ' = naturally bring a corresponding increase to retail shops, producing competition and the resultant cutting of prices at periodical sales. Fortunately the majority of merchants welcome t, vastly increased trade, which permits aPARSONS larger turnover at smaller profits, more frequent changing of stook, better opportunities of buying on favor- ? able markets, and a consequent discouragement of out-of-town buying. We will never accomplish a lower tax rate until we are able to in - creme our industries and population, fill up the many empty stores and vacant properties within our bonndaries, and install an economic MAYO R_ -y 92O administration of municipal affairs. It is 4i, common duty to the skilled and'other men in our industries, to the merchants and manu- facturers, to the children and all citizens, that we afford opportunities equal witb those provaailiag elsewhere ; to accomplish this we must ForProgresss and Improved - adopt ai regret it be impossible for me to meet each elector Local Conditions - personally in the next few days but I commend myself to you m a n — life-long citizen, enthusiastic at all times to seonre for the most bean- , tiful Town in North America a full share of the prosperity which is now looming up in Ontario and is being sought for by all progressive communities, and I unfit the Now Year may prove to be one of real progress for dodericb. In strL'iviiigt for this I sincerely solicit your valued influence and veto for the office of Mayor for 1920. Faithfully yours, "'IM111111111MIMIMNIMM.J. (16delich, Jan 10" 1920. G. L.
