O'Neill Sent to the Penitentiary for Eight

Winesor, Ont April 12. - Peter
O'Neill, alias Kelly, the ina
who held
up Andrew ,Bertreen, of Walkerville, at
the point of u revelvee on the night of
March 02 last,' and who was captured a
few minutes after the commission 'of the
crime, was placed on trial before his
Honor Judge Home at Sandwich this
morning. The case against the prisoner
was a clear ono, and a conviction was
easily Secured. After Mr. 'Bertram had
positively identified O'Neill as the rob-
ber, the judge sentenced him to eight
years in Kingston penitentiary', O'Neill,
or Kelly, was liberated from a Michigan
prison on the same day he was arrested
in Windsor. He had just finished a term
of three years for larceny.
Benjamin Feetham, a young Essex
Man. who has been working in, a Detroit
dry goods store for weeks past, was ap-
proached a few days ago by one of In-
speetor MeGlogan's minions and noti-
fied that he was violating the United
States alien law. He was given half an
hour to get out of Uncle Sani's del:mons,
and he obeyed, but he is very wrathy

For several days past it has been all -
/invent that the Hamlin avenue colony of
Flying Rollers from Detroit were snaking
preparations to move. Their prospective
deseinetion was a matter of considerable
speetilatien until a day or two ago, when
it vets found that a house had been pus-
ehased in this city, and will bo made the
heudquarters of the Flying Roll in Can-
ada. There are now four or five women
in the house, and snore are expected by
the end of the week. The men of the col-
ony only put in an appearance once or

meeting of the Conservatives on aeetur-

candidate in the field to oppose ex -Mayor
Jameson, the Liberal nominee.
Tho Trades and Labor and Temper-
ance organizatiens held a meeting on
Saturday night, and appointed a com-
mittee to secure an independent candi-
date to oppose Mr. Jameson. The com-
mittee will report to a public xneetiene in
the Bijou Opera House on Tuesday
night, and a candidate will probably be
nominated. It is consideredthat with the
joint endorsation of labor and inpor-

A meeting of ex -Canadian volunteers
was held here on Saturday afternoon.
The petition prepared by the Toronto
Veteran Association was unanimously
endorsed. It will be brought to the
attention of the Toronto association that
the petitions prepared contain no men-
tion of the service of volunteers called
out for active service in Manitoba at the
time of the Fenian raid in 1871,
Mr. W. 3. Montgotnery, an honorary
graduate of Toronto University, who
came to Manitoba years ago, dropped
dead while eating breakfast in the Royal
hotel here tide morning. Deceased had
been teaching school in a country town,
and came to the city recently. On Sotto. -
Clay night he was attacked with a hem-
orrhage.

Unearthed a skull in an excellent state
of preservation. The other bones of a
human skeleton were also found in the
vicinity of where the reknit was plowed

Belleville, April 12. -The oldest resi-
dents of the city died. on Saturday night.
Miss Johanna O'Donnell, aged 00 years,
Mr. Charles Marline has been award -
e11 the priee for pulpit oratory in Albert
College, after a close contest.
For some time past money had been
missed from the till of 'Win. Paterson
and Son's wholesale confectionery, ad-
joining the police station, and for several
nights as watch was kept, but in vain.
On Saturday night, however, Policeman
Hayes kept watch, and about 3 a. in.
Sunday the burglar entered the place
and was seieed by Hayes, who captured
him, and took hint to the cells. Ho
proved to be Themes Parsons, a painter,
who was born in Belleville,and has lived
here all his lite. Chief of Police Newton
and Hayes at once want to Parson's
house, and in the cellar found a large
quantity of goods stolen from Paterson
and Sons, elothing and other articles,
which have since been identified by local
dealers as their property. The prisoner,
who had previously been convicted for
theft, was brought up in the Police
Court, and remanded till Wednesday.

Kingston, .April 12. -James Dupont,
of this city, aged nineteen, stole a ride
on a G.T.R. freight train from Gan-
anoque last evening. While jumping from
between the cars near the junction ono
foot caught in the ladder, and he was
hurled against the car wheels, his leg
being so badly crushed that it had to be
amputated below the knee at the Gen-
eral Hospital.

Rev. Wilbur F. Crafts, in his address
in the City. Hall yesterday afternoon, said
that Toronto was the most progressive
oity in the Dominion'and second on the
continent in that respect to Chicago.

jutant-General's office in Kingston will
be closed, and that Lieut. -Col. Cotton
will be transferred to another city. The
Kingston district will be managed from

general changes of these offices through-

London, April 12. -Mo. Richard Do -
.bell, the Canadian Cabinet Minister
without portfolio, who sailed for New
York on the Cunard steamer Campania
yesterday, in an interview previous to
his departure, said that a contract to
build four fast ocean liners had boon
signed on condition that the Imperial
Government would share in the cost of
the proposed fast service between Canada
and Great Britain. The negotiations on
the subject are not yet concluded, but Mr.
Dobell hopes they will be shortly.
